REC News

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week students once again participated in our Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) as the start of our Lenten season. A big thank you to our Canteen Coordinator, Kathleen Coutts-Smith, and all the parents who volunteered their time to help set up and cook a delicious Morning Tea.

Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat. Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat these foods so they would use them to cook yummy pancakes!

On Wednesday, our school celebrated our first Mass of the year with Ash Wednesday and our Leadership Mass. During the Mass, everyone receives the Ashes as we remember that we are dust, and to dust, we shall return. A special thank you to Fr Joseph for leading our congregation and Sr Geraldine for helping to distribute the ashes.

Ash Wednesday also represents the day we begin our Lenten promises and follow the tradition of fasting, almsgiving and prayer as we remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by the devil. We are proud of how our students represented themselves during our Mass and look forward to learning more about the Lent and Easter seasons during Religious Education Lessons.

Once again, we will be participating in the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. This is a special time to think about our relationship with God, others and our environment, and find ways to put our compassion into action. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.

During Religious Education lessons over the next few weeks, learners will listen to inspiring stories from Napal, Australia, Zimbabwe and Vietnam. These stories will teach the children how the money that is raised can be used to help others. It is hoped that by providing people in these communities with education and training local communities can become more self-sufficient and therefore be empowered to transform their future and make lasting change. Through supporting Caritas Australia’s annual fundraising and awareness-raising appeal you are helping to bring thousands of Australians together in solidarity to build a better future for those that are less fortunate.

Today, your child has received a Project Compassion box for your donations.  If you would like more information on how the money you raise goes to help those in need please visit: https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/

Please put your compassion into action by supporting the Project Compassion Appeal. All Project Compassion boxes will need to be returned to school by Wednesday 5th April.

Yours in faith,

Mrs Karlee Hatton

Religious Education Coordinator
