Safe Travel to School
Our education district is a busy place during school drop off and pick up (especially when it rains at 3.15pm) and it is important that we ensure the safety of our students, staff and school community. We would like all students and staff to take note of road rules and expectations during these times and please discuss with your children around safe travel to school.
Riding/Walking and Scooting to School (Active Travel to school)
At Surfside we promote active travel to school but it is important to discuss with your children about safe active travel to school:
- Riding/Scooting – all students must wear a helmet and ride a roadworthy bike to school (working breaks, etc). Please discuss the route that your child travels to school, encourage riding in pairs or small groups and use the main supervised crossings when crossing roads. Students are not to ride bikes in the school grounds and will walk their bike until past the bollards in line with Bellarine SC and tennis courts.
- Walking - Please discuss the route that your child travels to school, encourage riding in pairs or small groups and use the main supervised crossings when crossing roads.
- Electronic Scooters (has capacity to travel faster than 10km/h) – No child will be permitted to ride an electronic scooter to or from school as these are not legally allowed. Please refer to Vicroads advice for clarification or more information - https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/scooters-and-wheeled-recreational-devices
Parking, Drop Off and Pick Up
It is a busy area during these times and especially more challenging when we encounter wet weather. Please follow all parking and road rules during these times to ensure student and pedestrian safety. Please use allocated parking bays at the front and rear of the school or use parking along the extension of John Dory Drive past the roundabout or extra parking near the Shell Road oval. At no times are parents to do the following:
- Double Parked at the front of the school
- Parked on the nature strip or non-parking bays in the Bellarine and Aquatic Centre carpark
- Enter the Bellarine Secondary College staff car park to pick up or drop off
- Walk with your children through the Bellarine SC staff car park
All of the above if not followed could result in a child being seriously injured so please don’t be offended when asked to move.
Police were conducting random checks of these areas throughout 2022 and we will encourage this again in 2023.
Please refer to the VicRoads pedestrian safety page for more information or clarification on road and parking rules.

We understand that the above is followed most of the time and we thank you for ensuring the safety of our local students and community members.
