Lenten Pretzel

The pretzel has a deep spiritual meaning for Lent. When early Christians would pray, they would cross their arms and touch each shoulder with the opposite hand. They also fasted very strictly during Lent, making their bread with only flour, water and salt. A monk shaped this in the form of praying arms for children and the pretzel was born! They called the breads “little arms” (bracellae). l From this Latin word, Germanic people later coined the term pretzel.

As a result, the pretzel is the most appropriate food symbol in Lent. It still shows the form of arms crossed in prayer, reminding us that Lent is a time of prayer.  It consists only of water and flour, proclaiming Lent as a time of fasting.

Pretzel Prayer

Heavenly Father, bless these pretzels,

Help them remind us that Lent is a time of prayer.

When we looks at the shape of the pretzel,

Let us remember to cross our arms

And lift our thanksgiving and needs to you.

Lord Jesus, use these pretzels.

Help them remind us that Lent is a time of fasting.

When we consider the simple ingredients,

Let us remember the sacrifice you made for us on the cross,

And offer our own little sacrifices.

Holy Spirit, inspire us through these pretzels.

Help them remind us that Lent is a time of almsgiving.

When we pray and fast,

Let us consider those who have less

And give to them from our hearts.

Amen.
