Sandhurst Swimming

On Friday the 28th of February, the Sandhurst swimming carnival saw some of Girton’s best swimmers take the pool against 8 other schools in the region. Competing in diving, individual races and relays, over 40 of our students gave it their all in the pool, which saw many of these students make it through to the Loddon Mallee finals. Whilst out of the pool, Girton students continued to put on a fine performance, with every racer being supported by students on the side. Our relay teams saw a mix of competitive swimmers and those who swim for fun, but the encouragement shared between the swimmers pushed many of our relays to take first place and venture onto the next stage of the competition.

Individually, Hunter Boswell (8 Jenkin), Ella Downing (9 Frew) and Mila Grant (12 Jenkin) all enjoyed a great day at the pool which saw them take home their respectful age champion awards. Overall, Girton took home second in the Male 13-16 Years Division A category, but won the 13-16 Years Female Division A category and were the 13-16 Years overall champion school and the 17-20 overall champion school. Congratulations to all competitors on the day and best of luck to those competing in the Loddon Mallee finals on the 19th of March.

Sandhurst Cricket

On Monday the 17th of February, the Girton Senior Cricket Team headed off to Strathfieldsaye to participate in the Sandhurst Senior Cricket competition against other schools from the Bendigo region. Matching up against Catherine McAuley College in the first game, Girton looked to start off strongly and elected to bowl after winning the toss. After an explosive start from the opposition batsman, Girton managed to stem the flow of runs extremely well to restrict Catherine McAuley to 7/119 at the conclusion of the 15 overs. Alex Murphy (2 wickets) and Aidan Clemens (2 wickets) were the pick of the bowlers. Unfortunately, Girton could only manage 9/76 in reply, with Caydn Thompson (26) the leading run scorer as Catherine McAuley were victorious by 43 runs.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the second game against Marist College was extended to 20 overs per side, with Girton once again winning the toss, but this time electing to bat first. After a dominant performance with the bat, Girton finished with 6/170 after their 20 overs. Aden Shanahan (47 runs) and Joel Bothe (41) were the leading run scorers. Needing 171 runs for victory, Marist were always up against it, and could only manage 8/109 in reply after their 20 overs. With a brilliant team-round bowling performance, Girton youngsters Asher Butcher, James Toomey and Aidan Clemens each claimed two wickets to cause a Marist collapse. Girton was victorious by 61 runs, ending the competition with one win and one loss. A special thanks to Mr Smalley, Ms Speed and Mr Slater for organising the day.

Hockey

On Monday 2nd of March the Girton Hockey Club had our first pre-season training for the 2020 hockey season. It was awesome to get to know all of our players as well as our new U17 coaches Amy Morgan (12 Jones) and Caitlin Bishop (12 Riley), and U15 coach Mrs White (Maddy). The talent and hard work out on the pitch make us feel excited and optimistic about the upcoming season.

If you think hockey is the sport for you, come give it a try! We train from 4:15-5:15 and play games from 5:30 onwards, both on Monday nights at the Garden Gully Hockey Complex. We are always keen for new members to the Girton Hockey Family, and contact Miss Speed if you would like to join this fantastic sport!
