Curriculum
Wow! It’s hard to believe that we are already in Week 2! We have kicked off the term on a positive note, and it’s nice to see how settled everyone is after coming back from holidays.
Last week, we got straight back into our learning routines! In Reading, we focused on asking deeper questions before, during and after reading a text. In addition, we looked at alliteration and even tried to read some tongue twisters! This week, we continue to look at questioning, and this will be linked to non-fiction texts. We will also be exploring similes and begin to learn cursive (joined) handwriting!
In Writing last week, we started our poetry unit! We wrote engaging acrostic and haiku poems, and looked at using interesting and descriptive vocabulary. This week our focus will be goal setting for the term. We hope that in preparation for this you have had the chance to discuss your child’s goals for this term, as this will be a focus in three-way conferences this week.
We continued to explore place value in Maths, and looked at renaming and reorganising numbers. We also started to look at problem solving strategies – our focus for last week was the strategy ‘Act it Out’. It was impressive to see how determined and motivated students were to solve a problem using this strategy. This week we will be looking at division – this was an area that students wanted to learn more about. We are excited to be including student voice into our planning to ensure that students are having an input into the topics that they would like to further explore.
In Guided Inquiry, we started our unit on Social Justice. We started to explore different people who are disabled, and the obstacles they face in order to achieve their goals. We also wrote our own biography poems, to learn more about each other! This week, we will be creating a glossary wall and exploring some of the habits of mind. In addition, we also celebrated NAIDOC week in our classrooms. All students watched the story of 'Bunjil the Creator', and had the chance to create and design their own Bunjil pictures.
On Wednesday this week, we are celebrating our Indonesian Day! All students will have the chance to complete a number of rotational activities in order to celebrate Indonsesian culture. Students are encouraged to wear red and white colours for this day.
Have a lovely week, we look forward to catching up with you all at three-way conferences!
