Welcome to Week 6

I would like to extend my thanks to all community who attended the Education Week Open Day and Book Parade. This was truly a wonderful experience for our school and I know the children enjoyed seeing you all celebrate public education with us.

Recently the media has reported on the updated version of our Enrolment procedures for public schools in NSW.

Please be aware that any new enrolments are to be considered under the Department’s Enrolment of Students in NSW Government Schools policy and the General Enrolment Procedures (2019), available on the Department’s website at https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/enrolment-of-students-in-nsw-government-schools

While parents may apply to enrol their child in the school of their choice, acceptance is subject to the child being eligible to attend and the school being able to accommodate the child. In some circumstances, where schools are over their designated enrolment cap and local enrolment buffer, non-local enrolment applications, including those of siblings, are not able to be accepted by the school. Please be aware that Brooke Avenue Public School has now exceeded their enrolment cap and are unable to accept non-local enrolments. For further information please refer to the school Student Enrolment Procedure and Protocols, available on the school’s website.

If you are considering moving you may wish to refer to the School Finder tool https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder to see if any siblings or extended family will be eligible to enrol at Brooke Avenue Public School in the future.

High School Students

We love seeing our former BAPS students returning from the High Schools and many of our children are walked home by high school students. Can I please ask that all students entering the school prior to the completion of the day sit on the stage under the library COLA. Teachers are reporting that some of our students are becoming distracted by the presence of the high school students near classes.

Driving Safely around our School

Can I ask that everyone takes care when driving around our school. Even with our teachers discussing road safety often in class, children can be unpredictable and put themselves at risk. Parking a safe distance from crossings and staying below the 40 km speed limit will make our school surroundings safer.

Obstacles and Resilience

Throughout the year we have been discussing the need for children to become more resilient. As a parent the best way to build resilience is in how we discuss obstacles. The simple act of framing a difficulty as a challenge rather than a problem can change a child’s mindset and help them become more resilient. Children take their cues from their parents, so the frame of a challenge gives the children something to rise to rather than be overwhelmed by. Coach your children through their challenges by giving them ideas to cope and manage. Even consider rehearsing some of the skills and language needed. Our children will have challenges in their lives that, in many ways, are no more challenging than those we experienced as children. How they react to the challenge is what has changed for our newer generations. We value our parent support at BAPS and appreciate the commitment our parents make to helping us build resilience in our students.
