From the Sport Development Leader
As we near the end of the year it is easy to think sport is winding down at the College. In the Sport Office it feels the opposite as we celebrate the success of the last month while also preparing our coaches and students for the upcoming Trimester 3 finals.
We are tracking well in all three sports - Basketball is heading for two finals, Touch Football could see three of the four teams play off for a pennant and, two Junior Netball teams are looking to book a finals berth also. Looking over data for the sporting awards presented today, we were surprised at the amount of pennants won this year. So many in fact we will be needing to install another display wire in the San Dam to proudly display these prizes of skill, dedication, and teamwork.
Today at Assembly we celebrated this year’s minor sport awards. Junior and Senior sportswomen in fifteen sports were celebrated for their part of making Mount Alvernia College sport an enjoyable and inclusive environment. In selecting these recipients it is nice to be able to hear from our coaches the reasons why these women are deserving of the awards. The most common praise is that they are team players, they can handle a loss just as well as a win, they know they want to win, and they insist on a winning culture. Well done to these students.
We also celebrated our best all-rounders in each year level. The balance of curriculum and sport is sometimes hard to achieve, but these girls all have it sorted, with some in as many as seven sports throughout the year while holding their academic grades just as high.
We also celebrated sporting excellence outside the school gates with Silver, Gold, and Platinum Awards. Three Mount Alvernia College sportswomen earned the top level award with national selection for sport. Amazing work, girls!
As I mentioned first, it may seem like sport is winding down but in fact, like the weather, we are just starting to warm up to prepare for 2020 sport. Tennis is the first sport to start next year. Trials for Tennis will be held in mid-November to ensure we are ready to hit the courts in 2020. Swimming is also starting next week in the college pool. Abbey Lihou is back again for Tuesday and Thursday Swim fit sessions. and we will be holding time trials for the 2020 CaSSSA Swim team in November also.
With Volleyball such a large sport, we will also select our Open Volleyball team before the year is out before year level trials begin next year. Bootcamp is also on every Friday as we look to build strength for sport and fitness.
So, with so much still out there on offer, keep those sporting vibes going and we will see you at the games.
