Student Leadership

The gym and GP room was abuzz with energy and excitement as nearly 100 students from 5 schools (Waverley Meadows, Wheelers Hill, Camelot Rise, Dandenong West and Jells Park Primary Schools) gathered on Monday 2 May. A jam packed day of fun and training for student leaders was planned and kicked off with Lara Davenport, Olympic Gold Medallist (200m Freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympic Games) and Social Awareness campaigner through her work with Red Dust Role Models. Lara spoke of her journey to the Olympics and the challenges she faced including missing the 2004 Olympics by 1/100th of a second. Through a series of workshops, students gained insight and skills in leadership qualities, goal setting, role modelling, overcoming fears, understanding your strengths and making a difference in the world around us. We were also privileged to hear from John Boyers, chaplain at Manchester United, and his take on leadership after working closely with Sir Alex Ferguson for 21 years. Red Dust Role Models is an organisation that works with Indigenous communities in outback Australia to build healthy individuals and communities. Our student leaders will be investigating ways that we can support their work and increase awareness of the needs of indigenous Australians and celebrate our cultural diversity.
