Year 3 Earthquake Challenge
Even though it has only been a few weeks, Year 3 has been working hard and learning all about natural disasters. This week we are learning specifically about earthquakes. The students were given a challenge in which they were allocated set materials, and required to build a house that would withstand a simulated “earthquake”. Students worked in teams to produce some very creative houses which will be tested next week. The houses will be placed on a table which will be shaken to replicate different levels of intensity on the richter scale. The groups who designed the homes lucky enough to survive will receive a prize!
LOTE (Mandarin)
The Year 5’s and 6’s have started their cooking sessions for this term. The Year 5 students are learning to cook fried rice and the Year 6 students are learning to cook fried noodles. The recipes with the list of ingredients have been downloaded and saved on the children’s iPads. Each child has been assigned a cooking group. In their group they have discussed which ingredient they would bring to their cooking session. I would like to thank all parents for ensuring their child brought the right ingredient to their cooking session. Please check with your child if they are yet to cook about the ingredient they have to bring to school. The children know the dates of their cooking session. Each child has been encouraged to put into practice what they have learnt and cook their family the dish they have learnt. Thank you again for your cooperation in making the cooking sessions an enjoyable and successful learning experience for the children.

Maths Talent Quest
The Maths Talent Quest has begun again for the year. For those of you who do not know, Maths Talent Quest is a nationwide competition where students complete a mathematical investigation. Students can complete a project on anything they want. This year there will be several classes working on projects as well as students working on their own individual or group projects.
The teachers held a meeting where students were given some information about what to include in their projects. We hope to catch up with students over the next few weeks to get projects started and track students’ progress over the course of the term. We will meet each Friday in Mr. Noordhoff’s room at lunchtime to give students an opportunity to discuss their ideas and continue to work in a supported environment on their projects.
If any parents have any questions please feel free to contact me via email or come and see me before or after school.
