Shane Delia visits the Food Technology Class

On Wednesday, July 27th, celebrity chef Shane Delia visited the unit 2 Food Technology students for a Q&A session at Catholic Regional College Sydenham. Shane, best known as chef and owner of Maha Restaurant, newly opened Biggie Smalls, and also as the host of his own TV show Spice Journey  Shane is currently a presenter on Postcards and has a wealth of personal experience and knowledge to share with students. Interestingly, Shane was able to connect with students, as he too was a ‘Westside boy’, owning his first home within walking distance from the College. Despite students choice of profession- food related or not, Shane’s story of his journey in life was ‘inspiring’ and ‘engaging’ which many students were able to relate to. The hunger to strive for giving each day your best go and going to sleep knowing you did your best today, was just one of very many accounts conveyed by Shane and left an impact on his audience.

Currently the unit 2 Food Technology students are designing their own profile of a client and designing a menu to meet client needs. Shane has recently teamed up with Peter Rowland Catering where creating various menus to meet client needs is required. Shane shared his stories and how he caters to specific dietary requirements when designing a menu. Talks about countries Shane has visited when filming Spice Journey and his passion for the different foods made in various countries were discussed. Food is not just a passion; food is a need for survival.

The appreciation and awareness of food students were made known to just by talking with Shane was a very intimate, fortunate experience to partake in and I would like to thank all year eleven students who was involved.

Thank you.
