Assistant Principal's Report

Student Leadership

It was fantastic to see a large number of our Year 5 students present their student leadership speeches today. Standing up and talking in front of all of Year 4, 5 & 6 is a nerve-wracking task, and everyone did such a great job.  We will now be counting votes and the staff will shortlist applicants for interviews with Mr McClare, Mrs Reiner and myself which will occur over the next week.

As we are finalising the roles of School Captains and House Captions students are aware that we may have a conversation with them about which house they may captain in 2019. Where possible this will be the house they have been in since joining the school, however, we do have some houses with small representation from applicants therefore some students may be asked to lead a new house in 2019.

After all stages of the process, the 2019 Student Leadership roles will be announced to the school at an assembly in the last week of this year.

Transition Project

Over the past few months, Michelle Mielnik has been working with Daniel Wakefield from Heathmont College as part of the Maroondah network of schools' Transition Project. Michelle and Daniel have been looking at Year 6-Year7 transition and how we are able to strengthen this process as the data shows us there are significant educational decreases as student move between primary and secondary school.

Last week Michelle presented with Daniel to our network Principal's network, which was also attended by representatives of the Department of Education. The main findings from their work were around the amount of time Year 6 students spend at high schools and how the feedback from students was they want to be able to spend more time in the last weeks of primary school at high school to ready themselves. Their work, alongside the work of other teachers across the network, has launched further work in 2019, something that I am excited to be working with teachers across the Maroondah Network on.
