IDAHOBIT Day

In celebration of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) Day on 17 May, our library volunteer, Fiona Thomas, made a fabulous rainbow-coloured display.

In keeping with the theme of our display, try some of these books:

The Boy In a Dress            David Walliams

Dennis is a boy who lives in a boring house in a boring street in a boring town, and he doesn't have much to look forward to.  But what he does have is dreams and once he starts to follow them, things will never be the same again.

The Marvels             Brian Selznick

The journey begins on a ship at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel.  After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre.  There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage.  Nearly a century later, Joseph Jervis runs away from school and seeks refuge with a reclusive uncle in London.  Albert Nightingale's strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.

Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer     Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid.  Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.  One day, he is tracked down by a man he's never met -- a man his mother claimed was dangerous.  The man tells him an impossible secret:  Magnus is the son of a Norse god.  The Viking myths are true.  The gods of Asgard are preparing for war.  Trolls, giants, and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday.  To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.  When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

The Erasure Initiative        Lili Wilkinson

I wake up, and for a few precious seconds I don't realise there's anything wrong.  The rumble of tyres on bitumen, and the hiss of air conditioning.  The murmur of voices.  The smell of air freshener.  The cool vibration of glass against my forehead.  A girl wakes up on a self-driving bus.  She has no memory of how she got there or who she is.  Her nametag reads Cecily.  The six other people on the bus are just like her: no memories, only nametags.  There's a screen on each seatback that gives them instructions.  A series of tests begin, with simulations projected onto the front window of the bus.  The passengers must each choose an outcome; majority wins.  But as the testing progresses, deadly secrets are revealed, and the stakes get higher and higher.  Soon Cecily is no longer just fighting for her freedom - she's fighting for her life.
