From the Acting Assistant Principal

Dannielle Gibson

Hello from the Junior School

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the Acting Assistant Principal for Years 7-9 this term.  I have had the pleasure of starting my career as a graduate at AHS in 2014.  I have held a number of teaching and leadership positions at Auburn High School.  Currently, I teach Year 12 Psychology and have overseen the Leading Teacher Portfolio of Instructional Practice for the last five years.  I am very excited to get to know our Year 7 to 9 students a little more throughout this term.

Year 9 Camp

We had a wonderful Year 9 camp to Mt Evelyn last week.  I want to congratulate the students on their curiosity and friendly, respectful behaviour across the three days.  We had a fantastic time participating in a number of activities including the high ropes course, the giant swings, a bike ride and my favourite, crate man!  Although it was chilly and a little wet, we managed to get some time toasting marshmallows around the fire and enjoying a quiet movie on the second night; I think many sleepy students appreciated the quiet end to the trip.  Thank you to all teachers, students and parents for your contribution to the event.

Year 10 Mock Job Interviews

Last week, we held our yearly simulated job interviews with all Year 10 students.  We are very fortunate to have Hawthorn Rotary Club work with us over the past seven years on this initiative.  We had 20 Rotarians, all with extensive experience in running businesses or corporations, who conducted interviews with our students.  Students were shown how to write an application letter, prepare a resume, and research for their selected position.  The feedback at the end of the session was very positive from the Rotarians.  They commented that many students presented extremely well, had done extensive research for the position and they would have been hired in a real-life situation.  What a great experience for our students and very worthwhile as it prepares them for the job market.  I would like to thank Hawthorn Rotary for working with our school and providing our students with this invaluable experience.  I would also like to thank Robyn Boardman, our Careers/Pathways Manager, for all her work in organising this event, and Thomas Firth for preparing the E4L lessons.

Digital Thumbprint Incursions

We have very high expectations of student conduct at Auburn High School. This involves being considerate of the way that we interact with each other within our physical school community and in the online space.  As we progress in the way we interact with the digital space, we want to equip our students with the skills to engage safely and kindly with each other online, but also to consider the digital identity that we are developing of ourselves online.  Our Year 7-9 students will be participating in our annual Digital Thumbprint workshops that are facilitated through Optus. During these sessions, students will be equipped with the knowledge on how to engage in responsible and safe interactions online.  Parents and Guardians are also invited to attend an evening workshop that is focused on supporting young people to navigate some of the challenges they face online.  Please let us know you’ll be attending via this form:  https://www.trybooking.com/BQRQB

Bookings for the event are essential due to Covid density requirements.
