AROUND THE COLLEGE

Term 2

INTER SCHOOL FOOTBALL

SENIOR BOYS FOOTBALL

What an amazing effort by the Senior Boys Football team who represented Western Heights College with integrity as they participated in a manner they should all be very proud of. The first couple of pool games enabled the team to fine tune their team structure before competing against the talented opposition from Grovedale who for the past few years have been the team to beat. Sticking to the game enabled Western Heights College to secure a memorable win which put us into the Grand Final. The rain continued to fall and despite the slippery & challenging conditions the team stuck to the task of always attacking the ball and victory was celebrated by all. Finally another football flag had been won at Western Heights College. It was very pleasing to see all team members displaying excellent sportsmanship which was most appreciated by the competing teams and umpires.

SENIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL

The Western Heights College Senior Girls’ football team consisted of a mix between year 9-12 girls who won all pool games against other schools in the Geelong region. The girls played four back-to-back games in tough weather conditions. Throughout the day the girls had one goal kicked against them. By the time the girl’s got to the finals they were very fatigued, sore and cold, however the coaches rounded up the team’s strength to get them through the last game and kept up there amazing scores. The girls will now advance into the next round in Melbourne where they will compete against the western regions. All of the girls displayed good sportsmanship by respecting the umpires and other players whilst playing a very fair game.

YEAR 9 LEARNING COMMUNITY

The Year 9 students have had a fantastic start to term two, with the vast majority of students looking amazing in their school uniforms. Please continue to support and encourage your son/daughter in the way they present themselves not only for school but also as a member of the wider school community.  Students have been diligently working through the biannual NAPLAN testing program which this year is being completed online. The advantage of this process will be a much earlier access to results. Some of the Year 9 boys had the opportunity to represent the school in the recent interschool intermediate boy’s football competition, where the team performed very well. All year 9 students were recently involved in a presentation by Headspace & Ambulance Victoria to support the schools Health & Wellbeing program.  Finally all students will receive information shortly about the planned Year 9 Adventure Camp planned for later in the year. As many students missed the opportunity to get away with their school friends last year, we look forward to making up for it and creating lasting school memories on this year’s camp.

YEAR 8 CAMP

Year 8 camp (student write ups)

When we went camping, the weather was great. We gathered around a big fire and ate pasta and chocolate ripple cake. We gathered in a big group on the ground with sleeping bags and pillows and looked up into the sky. We listened to music and talked. We played games in the dark like tag and we had fun.

On the second day at camp, we stayed the night in tents. I think the main focus this night was to be out in nature and use materials from nature to do things. For example, we had to find dry wood, leaves and sticks to start a fire to keep us warm. We used bracken, which is a type of plant, to sweep out our tents. We had to wash our hands in a tub of lake water and then some of us helped out with making dinner, which was pasta and some sort of tomato sauce. Some cut up the vegetables, some cooked the pasta over the fire and I made dessert. I spent 20 minutes whipping up the cream by hand then crushing the cookies just for no one to eat it (no spoons).

When we went abseiling, the view was magical. We had to climb up a mountain to get to the rock. It was 50 feet (15m) high. As we were walking up you could see the sun setting up on the cliff. There were massive rocks everywhere and trees touching the sky. It was amazing. When we went canoeing, there were spiders in the canoes. The water was freezing and the bottom of the lake was mushy.

My favourite part of camp was playing rugby and bike riding. I also like cooking damper. The damper was like cooking scones. It also tasted like it too. Sitting around the tent listening to music was the best. I hated the 4 hour bus trip there and 5 hour trip back through Melbourne traffic.

My favourite part of camp was the bike riding. I loved hanging out with my mates at the campfire and the night walks. I did get injured on camp when I fell off my bike but I still had a lot of fun.

One of the new skills we learned was splitting logs. We made pickles using cucumbers, sugar, dill and vinegar but not many people liked them. During the bush walking, we had to use a compass and a map to find letters on poles in the bush around the camp. When we went on the night walk, we saw shooting stars. The boys’ cabin had couches, a lounge room, a kitchen and a TV and a lot of rooms. The girls were all squashed in four bedrooms. Some students liked camping better, some liked the cabins better.
