Northcote High School Cross Country runners

Cross Country

On May 17th we held our Northcote High School Cross Country. Starting at the Baseball Diamond, the 3km event saw students travelling along the Merri Creek Trail, through Streets in the surrounding neighbourhood, and finishing off back at school on the Park.  We had a successful day with runners across all year levels competing.  This events is used as selection for the Divisional Cross Country which is held on May 29. A big thank you to all of our Staff, Sports Captains, VET Sport and REC Students and students volunteers who helped us out on the day.

Year 7 Netball

Due to the overwhelming response of Yr 7 Girls wanting to play netball, for the second year we decided to run a fun tournament for the Yr 7’s at Coburg stadium on May 23. This was a great day with some good competitive netball and a perfect way to give interested players the opportunity to play in teams with their peers. It also gave us the opportunity to select the Divisional Team. Well done to all who participated and especially to our older students who helped out with umpiring and coaching.

After several teams pulled out at the last minute we ended up only playing St. Johns College Preston in a 70 minute game. St.Johns provided solid opposition to our players which made our players work hard for their 12-0 win. With our forwards and midfielders all scoring one or two goals our avenues to goal were shared. Players who scored included flashy speedster Rosie Thyer, explosive Molly Uwland, dynamic Ella Roger, strategic Lucja Boyd-Singer, hockey star convert Taysen Wilcox, powerful Jamie Spangher and classy Celine Hussein Blanco. Our defence was led by the unpassable Giulia Galatas, goalkeeper Felicia D'Andrea, determined Indigo Van Der Hoeven and long striding Marielle Bouman. Special mention must also go to Miranda Cooney Hunt who showed talent despite an ankle injury and first gamer Mistica Mary Van Hecke who showed great improvement during the game. Writing out the players names was like describing a European World Soccer team. Admirable diversity. The girls were a pleasure to coach with an even mix of Year 9 and 10 players. They spent time in game planning, warm up drills and behaving exceptionally well whilst waiting for their 12.20 kick off.

The boys after drawing with Thornbury HS had to win their last game against Reservoir by 7 goals to win on goal difference. With the last game running late we only led 1-0 at half time. With the choice of missing our hired coach and playing on we decided to continue. Luckily we did as we scored our 7th goal with 2 minutes to play. A tense but memorable 7-0 win is what makes sport so great.

Both of these teams now progress to the Regional finals in early term 3.

The Yr 9/10 netballers had an outstanding day at the Divisional Competition.  We took two teams to compete, Northcote Blue and Northcote Purple.  They each played 5 matches with the Northcote Blue wining all 5 games. The Northcote Purple was also successful, only dropping 2 very close games for the day. The highlight of the day was the way in which all the girls represented NHS. They demonstrated fantastic teamwork and collaboration skills and implemented all aspects of fair play. This was noted by the umpires who made a specific effort to come across and acknowledge the positive manner in which our girls participated. Northcote Blue won the overall title and will progress through to the Regional competition to be played next term on July 24.
