Work Experience – it’s a wrap.

Last week, 277 students were actively involved in the work experience program, in addition to the 10 students who have ongoing placements as part of their VCAL program. A further 14 students are out on work experience placement this week. In addition, 36 students have organised placements to accommodate employers who are offering extraordinary experiences in the work place for our students, but were unable to do this during our scheduled work experience week.

We have already processed 324 work experience and 18 non-work experience placements this year, and over the past four years, over 1,350 employers have provided our students with somewhere to learn and grow as future members of the adult work force. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, it is no mean feat to secure safe, meaningful placements for 300 students at the one time. Most of the feedback from employers has been overwhelmingly positive, and students have also predominantly brought back stories of success. We are extremely grateful to all those employers who looked after our young people for the week, especially those who jumped in at the last minute, or who hosted more than one student.

A quick snapshot of the kinds of experiences our students had this year:

  • Retail (large and small-scale)
  • Design
  • Medical and scientific research
  • Car detailing
  • Aged care
  • Childcare
  • Gardening
  • A wide range of construction-based trades
  • Primary schools
  • Bike repairs
  • Horse care & vet nursing
  • Pharmacies
  • Libraries
  • Architecture
  • Business administration and reception
  • Beauty services
  • Hospitality
  • Emergency services
  • Radio & other media
  • Not-for-profit
  • Nursing & medical facilities
  • Health and fitness

As an example of the power of Work Experience, we had this shared with us recently from the parent of a 2017 alumnus, Luke Bell Layton. Congratulations Luke!

I just thought you'd like to know that my son, Luke Bell Layton who graduated from VCE last year was offered a 4 year cadetship in April with UBS Australia. This all came about from his Year 10 work experiences. Luke started a Computer Science Degree at Monash (his third option) and after some debate decided to transfer to RMIT and start his degree of choice, a Commerce Degree, and be closer to where he is working in the city. Nearly 2 months into his new position he is in his element and thriving. Exciting news and all credit to the teachers, staff and the incredible support he gained form attending Northcote High! - Vicki Bell
