Ulysses Community Report

A message from the Ulysses Team

Congratulations to all of the Ulysses students for yet another successful term. Thanks to  all of the parents and guardians who have supported students throughout Term 2. We can't wait to see you back for Term 3!

Literacy

In Literacy, the Ulysses community is working on planning, drafting, editing and publishing an Information Report. Students are brainstorming facts about the sun, earth and moon. We have also been looking at examples of the structure of an information report and what subheadings we can think of to create an engaging and informative piece. This information report also ties in with our inquiry unit where we have been focussing on the sun, earth and moon.

Inquiry

In Term 2 the Ulysses students have been learning about Day and Night. The students have have built a diorama showing how we experience day and night on Earth. Some students have built a diorama showing how we have seasons on Earth, by showing where the Earth is placed on its axis.

Term 2 Incursion - The Size of Your Sol

The Victorian Space Science Education Center (VSSEC) came to Aitken Hill in Term 2. Students were able to have a realistic feel for the relative sizes of the Sun, planets and for their orbits compared with their diameters. An 8 metre diameter star was laid out as a representation of the Sun. Students used sets of planets scaled to match to work out how many times each planet fits across the face of the Sun. Students take a set of numbered flags which represent the orbital radii of the planets. They order them and place them along number lines which extend out from the Sun in the centre to Neptune, the furthest planet.

Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day is a special day that occurs on the 26th of May every year. The Ulysses community learnt why it is a day of remembrance and who it involves. They researched what the colours on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags mean. During Reconciliation Week activities students learnt about Indigenous art and why it is so important to them. Students created their own artwork using a range of symbols.
