WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

#CupRescue Schools Program
It is estimated that over one billion take-away coffee cups end up in landfill each year in Australia, with some estimating that the total of all take-away cups going to landfill is close to three billion annually. Take-away paper cups are lined with plastic to prevent liquid seeping through, which unfortunately prevents the cups being recycled through normal paper recycling facilities.
Surf Coast Secondary College will be working with 7-Eleven and will be receiving some cup recycling units for our staff to deposit their coffee cup, lid or straw in the recycling units.
As a College we have a strong focus on sustainability and the environment and try to make a positive impact where possible.
Junior Girls Inter School Football
Junior girls football went out interschool sports for the day. They started off the day playing 3 round games where they won by over 50 points in each game, with the other team not scoring more than 6 points against them. They then made it into the Grand Final against Western Heights who had also dominated their division. The game was absolutely fantastic and the girls did an incredible job! The game ended up at 13-14 in favour of Western Heights. The girls should be very proud of their efforts for the whole day, altogether they ended up scoring over 150 points!
Year 8
Hands On in Year 8 Science
Students in Year 8 have been extra ‘hands on’ with their Science learning this Term. As part of their Biology unit students engaged in a range of practical activities including using compound microscopes and creating their own plant and animal cells using jelly and lollies to represent the organelles and cell parts. Students also dissected a heart to better understand the pathway of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
Sarah S -
"In Science this week we dissected a lamb's heart, we looked for the vena cava and aorta. The process was interesting and gave us a great visual representation of what our hearts would look like. We did this to boost our knowledge of how the heart works to keep us alive. We used sharp scissors to cut open the heart and look at the four different chambers. It was great to be able to have this hands-on experience and see how it all works."
Years 9
Coast Guardians Semester 1 2021
Students from Year 9 Environmental Studies have been working with GORAPA during semester 1 to remove invasive weeds along the Surf Coast. Here they can be seen removing Wattle trees introduced from NSW and taking over the sand dunes.
