National School Constitutional Convention

On Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 March, Lachlan Gourley was selected to represent Frankston High School at the National Schools Constitutional Convention which took place at The Hotel Windsor in Melbourne. Lachlan was selected from over 90 students to fill 25 positions. The topic for the Convention was,

Should the Constitution have a new preamble that would recognise our history, our aspirations and the many peoples and groups that make up our nation?

Students heard from several guest speakers who expressed their views regarding the topic, and they were addressed by the Governor-General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David John Hurley.  Students were also given a guided tour of Parliament of Victoria. They were then allocated into groups to develop a possible preamble for the Australian Constitution.  This was presented to the rest of participants at the convention and a vote was had to determine the most appropriate preamble.

Year 7 History Excursion

On Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 May our Year 7 students attended the Willum Warrain Indigenous Centre in Hastings.  This was a great opportunity for students to learn more about Indigenous culture and the important ritual and cultural practices that are linked to such a rich and diverse society.  Students enjoyed taking part in the interactive games but also the smoking ceremony as well.

A big thankyou to all of our Year 7 History teachers who attended this excursion and for those individuals who did help out.  They are Mrs Meghan Wilson, Mr David Nicol, Mrs Deborah Bretherton, Mrs Katie Watson, Ms Emily Sykes, Mr Anthony Anderson, Mr John Russell, Ms Ursula Kulling, Ms Hannah Martin,  Ms Paige Jessulat and Mrs Michelle Snooks.

Below are some reflections about the excursion from some of our Year 7 students.

"The day was really fun and we learned a lot of things like stories and a traditional welcoming."

"The day was amazing, we did bushwalks, and ate leaves, we held tadpoles and did a smoking ceremony."

"I thought the History excursion was a great way to learn about another culture."

Yakult Factory Excursion

On Monday 10 May the Year 12 Business Management classes went to the Yakult factory in Dandenong.  We were taken on a tour of the Yakult factory to see the operations management system in action.  The tour was really structured to our area of study, Operations Management.  Our tour guides showed us around the factory and allowed us to observe Yakult’s operations system, technological developments, their materials management strategies, their quality control strategies, how they use lean management to minimise waste and how they use corporate social responsibility in the manufacturing of their product.  The tour was really beneficial for us all, as it allowed us to put the knowledge we have learnt in class into a real-life situation that we can further use to assist our learning.

Zoe Semetas, Year 11

Business Management Student

This term the Year 12 Business Management classes were so lucky to have been welcomed by Yakult to see their factory and their operations system in place.  During this excursion to the Yakult factory in Dandenong we were able to observe how their products were made from start to finish, whilst we learnt about the history of Yakult and its journey within the Australian market.  Yakult is a relevant business to our study design as it demonstrates corporate social responsibility, waste management techniques, quality control systems and it implements technological developments to operate. Being able to observe these practises helps students to link our course work and see the real-world applications of what we are being taught.  Many thanks to the Business teachers for organising and taking us on this great excursion.

Environmental Geography Excursion

Environmental Geography students recently went scuba diving down at Rye Pier.  Students saw marine life including sting rays, banjo sharks, sea horses and crabs.  Aside from having heaps of fun on a very clear day, on a more serious note, students were discovering the Bay’s sea floor and searching for signs of marine debris, an area of study in Environmental Geography. Thank you to Mrs Jackie Evans as she spends a lot of time and puts a lot of effort into these excursions.

Lifesaving

Term 2 has been just as good as Term 1 for the Advance Lifesavers. Twenty students got to go Dolphin Diving in Week 2 and saw an abundance of sea life off the Sorrento Coast. The continual perseverance of students through the colder winter months has been a credit to them with 40 students in attendance at all sessions.

This term we have had guest speakers in from Polperro Dolphin Diving and Frankston Beach Association to educate us about the importance of sustainability for our beautiful Frankston Beach that we use so regularly.

We have also had our termly carnival where we had Portsea Surf Lifesaving Club Certified Legends Mr Rowan Cameron and Mr Ian Campbell to assist and lead the way.  The leading students including Audrey Bechaz (Year 9), Dasha Koshelieva (Year 9), Kayde St Anne (Year 9), Bella Hodges (Year 10), Oscar Menzies (Year 10), Noah Menzies (Year 10), Dillon Woods (Year 10)  in the program have been fantastic at training and educating the next generation of talent including Henry Code (Year 7F), Jess Smith (Year 7A), Lucy Stubbs (Year 7M), Tegan Hawkins (Year 7K), Shae Stocker (Year 8L)  and Abbey Reeves (Year 8E).

We are looking forward to working with The Sweetwater Creek Action Group over the next two weeks and then getting stuck right back into the Lifesaving theory.  Please see Mr James Cameron if you are interested in signing up for the second semester.

Thanks to Mr Joshua Smith and Mr Adam Martin for their continued support for the program."
