Middle School Teenagers and the Law Victoria Police Incursion

On Friday 30 April the Middle School Teenagers and the Law classes were fortunate to have an incursion from Victoria Police as part of their “Courts, Crimes and Criminals” Unit.  Ordinarily the students would attend the Frankston Magistrates’ Court to witness some live court cases but COVID-19 regulations are not presently permitting this excursion to take place.  However, the replacement incursion from Victoria Police was an insightful and enjoyable success!

Senior Constable Aaron Lord and Senior Constable Matthew Goodwright started off with a thorough explanation of the application process for becoming a member of Victoria Police, all of the different departments available to someone interested in a police career along with some anecdotes about the daily life of a police officer.

Afterward, the students had the opportunity to ask questions that they had prepared in class. The students are to be commended on the thoughtfulness and breadth of their questions – and they were rewarded with some very interesting answers which we have since discussed in class.

Here’s some student feedback:

“My favourite part about the police incursion was when one of the officers told us the strangest reason that he had to arrest someone for, that a man had driven out of his 5km zone for a bundle of ALDI bananas. The man passed three other grocery stores whilst driving!”

Lily Forbes-Tegner, Year 10

“The police incursion was very insightful into what it is like to be an officer and the steps to take in order to become one. The most interesting thing I learnt was that no beards are allowed in the police force, unless it is for medical or religious reasons.”

Kaleb Ryder, Year 10

“We found it funny how using pepper spray can go wrong sometimes… like when they accidentally spray themselves or their partners…whoops!

Tayah Bennett and Olivia Bergin, Year 9

“The policemen were very informative, and it was interesting to see the wide range of departments that a police officer can choose from.”

Desiree Ypatidis, Year 10

A huge thankyou to Senior Constable Aaron Lord and Senior Constable Matthew Goodwright for this illuminating and engaging session.  We look forward to seeing them again for our Teenagers and the Law classes in the future.

iSupport

On Monday 3 May the Year 11 SLC students ran a wellbeing iSupport for all the Year 11 students.  We ran all sorts of sessions such as uno and card games, trivia, mindful colouring, meditation, dodgeball and even a university information session.  The Year 11 students chose which activity they could participate in.  Each activity had the opportunity for the students to relax, or even just take their minds off the crazy year ahead of us.  These sessions were widely enjoyed by students across the cohort. Many thanks to Mrs Sharon Bourne and Blake Shaw (Class of 2020) for running the university information session and Ms Kirsten Bakker for running Meditation.

Williams Adams Kits

For the past few Wednesday afternoons, the LEAD Class and some of the SLC students have been working together with Frankston Rotary Club to make 2000 Williams Adams kits. Williams Adams Kits are used by many workers in the CAT industry for oil testing to make sure the machinery is all working correctly.  During the past weeks we have learnt many skills which include team work, time management, motivation, multi-tasking and have learned more about Rotarian and what Rotarians do in the community.

A very special thanks too Frankston Rotary Club and their members Trudy, Phil, Richard, David and Diana. The financial remuneration from this team building activity will be put towards leadership opportunities and community projects.

Thank you to everyone who was involved.

IDAHOBIT Day

On Monday 17 May Frankston High School celebrated IDAHOBT Day (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia). 75% of LGBTQIA+ youth experience some form of discrimination and we are committed to promoting a diverse and accepting culture within our school.

At lunch time on the previous Friday, the wonderful Lilly Wells arranged an IDAHOBIT celebration with Rainbow Alliance, SLC, and Craft club students, who also teamed together to make and distribute rainbow ribbons.  These were distributed to students and staff.  Then on the Monday, the school community supported the day with an official 'Funky sock' day.  SLC members shared messages of love and support around the school in chalk.

It was wonderful seeing students and staff sporting their colourful ribbons and socks to show their support for our LGBTQIA+ students and community.  Thank you to all staff, in particularly The Wellbeing Team, Ms Alarna Summers, Mr Isaac Bakker and Mrs Sarah  Bahramis.
