Teaching and Learning

Room 8

This term in Room 8 students have been learning how to write procedures. Students were given a procedure on ‘How to Make Fairy Bread’ which didn’t include specific instructions. Students then rewrote the procedure with instructions that were more specific. The class really enjoyed the lesson and they were even able to eat some fairy bread!!

Did you know that Japan designed a Kimono to represent each country in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? During our Reconciliation Week activities, Room 7 and 8 looked at this design and brainstormed other designs and artwork we could use to create our own.

It was lots of fun, and we think they look great!

Science News

In Science, the JP students have been learning about light. They discovered how to send messages to each other using a torch and different coloured circles - just like traffic lights! They experimented with this idea using commands that matched each coloured circle. It was so much fun!

The Year 6/7 students have been experimenting with hydraulics. They used pistons filled with water to create movement. These will be used to design and create their hydraulics machines

PE News

For the lovers of being physically active and sport, West Beach has been the place to be! After Term 1 completing the Jump Rope for Heart Challenge, we have flown into the Premiers be Active Challenge for Term 2. Our students are aiming to be physically active for 60 minutes every day, for 4 consecutive weeks to receive a medal from the Premier. Here are some of the ways we are keeping active at West Beach.

Physical Education Program

We’ve been lucky enough to have some brilliant visits from the Western Basketball Association, the South Australian Cricket Association and Badminton South Australia who have added great value to our PE program. Jed Altschwager from Para Rowing Australia gave us an inspiring presentation about how he recovered from a work injury, losing his leg 5 years ago. He is now preparing to wear the green and gold at the Tokyo Olympics, what a champion! Thanks for sharing your story and visiting WBPS Jed!

Our Year 3-7 students have just finished 4 weeks of Hockey, learning some of the skills, rules, and tactics. We will be sure to watch the Kookaburras (Men) and Hockeyroos (Women) go for gold at the upcoming Olympics! Who knows, maybe we will see one of our WBPS students representing Australia at the Olympics one day?

Our Junior Primary Students have acknowledged and celebrated our Aboriginal Cultures through playing modified versions of Traditional Indigenous Games. The games have given us opportunity to practice skills such as striking, dodging, throwing, catching, and kicking. We have had lots of fun and improved our skills and confidence. A big thank you to students Nash Moore, K'aos Smith and Bailey Trask from our Nunga Group who have helped Mr Kitto deliver the sessions.

Upcoming

After a successful Sporting School Grant Application, we were able to purchase 6 Table Tennis sets! Exciting times with PE and lunch time activities ahead. Mr Kitto is super excited for this! Who will be the WBPS table Tennis Champion?

Extra-Curricular Sport and Activities

A spectacular effort from all 21 WBPS Cross Country athletes who challenged themselves to race against schools in the Airport and Western SAPSASA Districts. A big well done to Zane Rooney, and Lara and Max Scutchings who were successful in being selected to race at the State Championships. All the best!!

Due to student interest, we have nominated teams in the following State-wide School Sport Competitions: Boys Soccer, Boys AFL, Girls Netball, Boys Basketball. Teams have been trialing and training at recess, lunch and after school. A big thank you to students, staff and parents’ who have committed their time and efforts to ensure we can experience these incredible opportunities to represent our school. For those selected, please make sure to get your consent notes returned ASAP. We know you will all do your very best in your upcoming rounds of competition. Good luck!

More sport, why not? WBPS will be entering both Boys and Girls Rugby Teams to the upcoming carnival. Training starts this week! Our Girls have also just begun training for an AFLW Crows Cup held later in the term. Great opportunities all round, and more information to come!

Finally, a big thanks to Mrs Newcombe and Ms Jaimee who have been training a Jump Rope for Heart Squad. The students have been learning new tricks for upcoming demonstrations and competitions. Keep up the great work everyone!!
