Year 5/6—Celebrating Learning

5/6 - Mainstream

On Wednesday the 26th of May, the Year 5/6 students went on an excursion to the Immigration Museum.  We started by catching the 9:15am train into Flinders Street Station, and then walking to the museum.  Once our 10 o’clock session started, we went into this large room with lots of different objects from real stories of immigrants.

We sat down at a table with one teacher, and those were our groups for the day.

Each group got allocated a set of different objects and we had to study them and answer questions about them.  When we finished in that room we each got a ‘passport’ and headed out with our groups.  Each group started in a different room and we had to read all of these cool things about immigrants and then record them in our passports.

Some of the artefacts that the museum had, really made you think about the things that happened in history and how they affected the “White Australia” population and immigrants seeking a life here.

One of the interesting artefacts I found were the postal stamps from the “White Australia” times in 1910-1920, and the “White Australia” national song.

The interactive journey maps were really cool as well.

We had a really great time at the immigration museum, and I would love to go there again some time. By Leah 5/6B
