Heal Country - Foundation to Year Two Gardening

We have been busy with planting seeds, taking cuttings, turning compost and keeping an eye out for fungi that has arrived in the cold, wet months. As part of our whole school integrated unit ‘Heal Country’, the students will be helping out Darebin Council with the re-wilding of Henderson Park. Around all the edges of the park will be planted a diverse range of grasses, flowers and small shrubs all indigenous to this area, planted and cared for by Thornbury Primary students!

We have a keen team of garden leaders who are our Nanggit Balit group, who spend time on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons doing some of the important garden care for Thornbury Primary, fixing up our native bee hotels, cutting back hedges and giving garden love to areas that need it within our grounds. Our school slowly has a number of example biome environments taking shape through our plantings.  We have a grassland, a wet temperate rainforest, a Mediterranean area and a tropical rainforest in our hothouse. These can all be used as teaching spaces for understanding the biomes of the world.
