T.I.M.E (Music)

This term has been a percussive piece of magic with cultural drumming from Japan and Gamelan music from Indonesia. From the early years up to the year sixes, students have been working on word rhythms, playing instruments, and learning about the way that these cultures play their instruments. Through the lens of Taikoz (soon to perform at TPS - unfortunately rescheduled due to restrictions) students have learnt about Japanese drumming, and have even learnt some of the bands most well known songs.

As we have been lucky enough to have Jeremy as an artist in residence at Thornbury Primary, students have been given the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with the whimsical and fascinating world of Gamelan. Jeremy has taught them about the Gong and similar instruments to learn traditional loops, as well as discussing the overlapping nature of rhythms within this style of music. Soon we will be looking at more of his large collection of percussive instruments from the region to explore more of the traditions held in the music of one of our neighbouring countries. Below are some images of the students playing as well as a video to enjoy.
