Term 2 has brought many real-world opportunities for our students in HSIE. Teachers have organised fieldwork excursions for Stage 4 and 5 Geography in our local environment. Year 7 enjoyed a walking tour of Gosford City as part of our Place and Liveability Unit. Students were able to explore the changes that have occurred and that are still taking place in the CBD. As part of their assessment students have produced letters highlighting further areas that would make Gosford more liveable for a range of different generations.

Students from Year 8 enjoyed the opportunity to explore our local catchment area and undertake a variety of fieldwork activities. Water quality testing, surveying and rubbish audits were conducted and analysed for their impact on Narara Creek. Post-excursion, students explained the positive and negative impacts on the Brisbane Water catchment.

As part of the Environmental Change and Management Unit in Year 10 Geography, students travelled to Terrigal-Wamberal beaches to understand the various impacts of erosion on our coast. Our Year 10 students were excellent role models for our school as we traversed the extensive beach walk from Wamberal, through Terrigal Esplanade then concluding at the Skillion. Students were able to learn about the issues faced by the local residents to keep their houses secure from the threatening storm surges.

Congratulations to Lily Arendse, Ella Brunsdon and Lily Els for their efforts at MUNA 2023. This is a Model United Nations Assembly experience which is run by Central Cost Rotary. Our Henry Kendall High School team members represented Spain on the day and are commended for their confident and impassioned speeches during the day. The team developed strategic alliances with other NATO members and voiced their national concerns over pandemic preparedness, nuclear test band and global food insecurity.

Congratulations to all students who have participated in the Australian Geography Competition and Australians History Competition this term. Henry Kendall High School has achieved outstanding results in these competitions, and it is hoped that our 2023 participants will maintain this proud tradition.

Year 8 French currently have their ‘Week In My Life’ Multimodal Assessment Task, due at the conclusion of this term. Miss Ellis is looking forward to seeing the creativity of students displaying their typical or ideal week, whilst refining their French speaking skills.

Stage 6 HSIE subjects are working towards building their knowledge and skills in preparation for the Trial exams mid Term 3. HSIE staff encourage their students to ensure they have a healthy study routine and study space at home to best prepare them for success later in the year.

As we conclude Term 2, many assessment tasks have been submitted and returned with teacher feedback. Please encourage your child to reflect on their work and determine how they could build on their skills for Semester Two. Our faculty are looking forward to Semester Two and the range of learning opportunities ahead. A reminder Stage 4 transitions from Geography to learning History for the remainder of the year.
