Year 7

How can you use film to inspire change? This term Year 7 have been thinking about the positive change they want to see in their world, and how they can inspire this. The catch? They’ve only got 60 seconds and 20 words of dialogue to do it in.

We started the term with a series of film challenges. Classes have learnt about camera angles, match cut transitions and mise en scène - and challenged to use all of these techniques in their films. This has been Year 7’s first major collaborative task, and we’ve enjoyed watching them plan together as they construct their films. Each class is hosting a film premiere in Week 9 and have invited our Year 6 friends from Gosford Public School to come and enjoy the show.

Year 8

How can we celebrate First Nation Culture? This term has been all about food, culture and language for Year 8. We’ve been exploring First Nation culture and diving deep into traditional Australian ingredients like Lemon Myrtle, Finger Limes and Kangaroo. We were lucky enough to visit Girrakool Reserve with Rumbalara Environmental Education center and learn more about culture and our local environment on site.

Back in class, students have been researching their ingredients and working out how they can use this to create a unique meal. Each Year 8 class will host a restaurant in Weeks 9 and 10 to celebrate NAIDOC week, inviting Elders from their own lives to share a meal and storytelling. A highlight to the project has been watching Year 8 support each other in the kitchen where they problem solve how to cook meals they may not have necessarily cooked before. They have shown amazing resourcefulness and supported each other by helping other teams to prep ingredients, plate food and wash pots and pans.

We need to extend a special thank you to the Year 10 cooking mentors who have joined us for each cooking session and offered advice and support. This has been a great collaboration and Year 10 have added so much to the sessions. We look forward to sharing our meals and what we’ve learnt this term with our guests.
