Year Advisers Report

Years 7, 9 & 11

Year 7 have had a settled finish to Term 2. The team environment has continued to thrive throughout the term as we continue to work towards our Year 7 Key actions:

Empathy, Teamwork, Resilience, Responsibility and Gratitude

The term has concluded with some key events in the calendar. In Week 6 we had the Henry Kendall High School Athletics Carnival, and we have seen may of our students representing our school in Regional and State Futsal Championships, Zone Swimming and Cross Country and Oztag Gala Days.

The Athletics carnival saw many of our students compete in many events, all having success and earning their house very important points. It was great seeing the students enjoy their first Henry Kendall High School carnival and they looked great dressed up in their house colours. Congratulations to those students who achieved great success and earned the right to represent Henry Kendall at the Zone Athletics Carnival.

I would also like to commend the students who performed at OnTrack, it was an amazing night, and the performers were outstanding.

We have also seen many students represent Year 7 and the school at many extracurricular events this term. The under 14’s Futsal girls were very successful at Niagara Park in the Regional Futsal Championships and earned the right to go to Maitland in Week 8 to compete in the State Futsal Championships. Zone Cross Country and Zone swimming have also seen worthy recipients represent our school and the Oztag Gala Day in Week 9, had a host of students representing the Year 7 team.

Year 7 have settled in quickly into life as a high school student and I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements. My words about each of my wonderful students will be displayed in the upcoming Semester 1 report comments, where parents and carers will find a Year Adviser comment that has explained how well their child has settled into Henry Kendall High School and the great things they have achieved. I encourage all parents and carers to read this!

It has been a pleasure working with Year 7 in Semester 1. I hope everyone has a wonderful break and they come back energised and ready to work hard in Semester 2.

As Term Two comes to an end, we’ve been reflecting on the great achievements of Year Nine in Semester One. We had the privilege of reading through so many positive report comments across the entire grade and we’re so proud of the hard work you all put into your schooling.

In Week 6, 30 students were invited to take part in Altitude Leadership day in Sydney where they joined Year Nine students from a number of other schools and learnt about what it takes to be a student leader. It was great to see so many of our potential future leaders make the most of this opportunity, make friends with students from other schools and of course, take advantage of free doughnuts on the way home. Special shout out to Lachlan Glasson who was the only student in the audience invited to talk on stage and to Carter Bush for asking two great questions of the guest speakers.

Congratulations to the following Year 9 students who have achieved Bronze Awards this term: Tamara Adshead, Ebony Brady, Lhamo Delek, Daniel Falkingham, Ethan Glanville, Lillian Pech, Richard Pollard, Elaina Quinn, Levi Sanders, Eva Scott, Seren Sharman, Lucca Squires, Ariana Tuckey, Ewan Van Tubbergh, Claire Weaver, Charlotte Williams, Tavier Wolfgramm, Annileise Paterson, Max Orr, Keeleigh O'Carroll, Thomas Harrison, Aliyah Henshall, Jozua Homer, Isabelle Hudson, Lachlan Glasson, Shine Jeong, Gracie Kenny, Sion Kim, Lily McNeill, Tegan Mitchell, Onyx Neaves, Caitlin Norris and Xuan Zhang.  Well done to you all!!

This term we’ve also celebrated with our fellow volleyball star, Sophie Chalker who helped the school’s team make it to the semi finals. Well done, Sophie!

We hope you all have a safe and happy break and we look forward to seeing you back for an amazing Term 3.

Term 2 is completed, congratulations to Year 11 on the completion of their second term of Stage 6. Time is flying by and now they only have one term left before they begin Year 12. Next term will be another big one for the year group and will be full of more opportunities to prepare for the HSC, particularly through the end of course exams.

At the end of Week 9, applications opened for the school leadership positions of School Captain, Vice Captains, and Prefects. This is a rigorous process which includes the following requirements:

  • Students must be in Year 11 and have been involved in leadership roles in the junior years, such as being on the SRC, house captains, on a student action team, sporting teams, or in their part-time jobs.
  • Applicants must obtain a form from Miss Ellis or Miss Reynen
  • Eligible applicants will go through an interview process with Miss Ellis, Miss Reynen and Mr Backhouse
  • Chosen applicants will present a speech and then be elected.

We are very excited by the leadership potential already shown in the year group and can’t wait to start the process and elect our new leadership team for 2024!

At each year assembly, students who have demonstrated excellent effort and conduct over the week and have been nominated by their teacher, receive a Reynen’s Reignanators Award. Congratulations to the following students have been awarded this term:

During the holidays it is Jump Back July. A month where we find ways to bounce back. Nelson Mandela once said,

“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again”.

Over the next year and a bit, we are going to face some setbacks, and we need to learn how we bounce back from them. Below are some exercises to try over the break to start working on bouncing back.

Week 1

  • Be willing to ask for help when you need it.
  • Find something to look forward to today
  • Get the basics right: eat well, exercise and go to bed on time.
  • Pause breathe and feel your feet firmly on the ground.
  • Shift your mood by doing something you really enjoy.

Week 2

  • Reach out to someone you trust and share your feelings with them.
  • Look for something positive in a difficult situation.
  • Write your worries down and save then for a specific ‘worry time’.
  • Challenge negative thoughts - find an alternative interpretation.
  • Get outside and move to help clear your head.

Have a restful and enjoyable break. Stay safe and be kind to others and yourself.

Remember

“Self-belief is the secret to success”.
