Intermediate Soccer : penalty shoot out victors!

Intermediate Divisional Badminton

Northcote had 2 teams playing at Reservoir High. Our boys team had 2 strong wins against William Ruthven and Lalor before losing a tight, competitive game to eventual winners Reservoir. Our girls had more of a social, learning day against 4 local schools. They displayed how much they learnt and enjoyed the day in the last games against Preston. After playing the regular 4 single and 2 double games they then spent extra time playing reverse doubles. They finished playing their own creation of 4 against 4 on 1 court. With all of the other teams gone they suggested the 2 teachers joining into their games. Although this didn’t eventuate l was proud of their enthusiasm and the enjoyment they had playing Badminton and socialising with students from other local schools.

Senior Soccer

On Tuesday 16May, the Senior Boys' Soccer team competed in the divisional tournament against 4 neighbouring schools. After comprehensive victories in our first three games (7-0; 3-0; 5-1), we faced Lalor who were equal with us on games won and goal difference in what would be the decider. Following a nimble run down the left-side, Matthew Stephens earned a penalty that was calmly put away by Vanya Swinnerton. The team defended resolutely from that point, holding on to a 1 goal lead, which puts them through to the regional tournament. Special thanks to the coaches, Yani and Ethan. Goal-scorers: Vanya S (4); Alex Mina (3); Josh G (3); Otto W (2); Ned VDH (1); Kaan K (1); Kyri G (1); Alex Mak (1)

Our seniors Girls soccer team also had success at the Divisional Competition.  With only one game to play against Lalor North, our girls combined well together in both attack and defence. We defeated Lalor North (5-0).  Goal scorers were Rainer, Scarlett and Charlotte.  A fantastic effort also from our Goal Keeper Saskia Cormier. We would like to thank Ms Carrig for coaching our team. A big thanks also to Ned van der Hoeven who stepped in to Ref the second half of the girls game which meant missing part of his own match.  We are looking forward to playing the Regionals in July.

Intermediate Soccer

On Monday 22 May, the Intermediate Girls soccer team played in the divisional soccer at Darebin International Sports Centre. After some tough fought matches, the intermediate girls won through to the next stage after winning all 4 of their games. The whole team played well and there were many impressive performances, but Lily Sibillin and Indigo Rodger were standouts playing consistently well across all matches.

The Year 9/10 boys also competed in the Intermediate Soccer competition at the same venue. We had 16 of our boys compete from Northcote High and none of them disappointed. I would firstly like to thank Mr Medcalf and the other teachers  that were involved, for giving me the opportunity to coach this amazing team. I was incredibly proud of what this team was able to achieve, considering we weren’t favourites going into the competition. I would like to congratulate William Giannakopoulos who I picked as captain who showed great leadership throughout the day.

Game 1 vs Lalor 1-0

The boys went into this game knowing it was a tough one. Lalor getting to the final of last year's Division Competition. A clash against Lalor was never going to be easy, and it started that way with Lalor on the front foot straight away but our defence was holding up, before a counter attack just before half time saw Finbar Kennedy cut inside and make it 1-0. After the half time the boys held on to secure our first win of the day.

Game 2 vs William Ruthven 6-1

The most rewarding result of the day. The boys controlled the whole game very well and dominated from the start with an early goal with everyone playing their role. A lot of boys getting on the score sheet in a good win.

Game 3 Final vs Preston 0-0 (5-4 penalty shootout)

Going into the final needing a win to get to regionals there was a lot of excitement around this game, and it did not disappoint. First half was an end-to-end game with William Giannakopoulos and Matthew Scopelitti holding the team together. At halftime I gave the team some words of advice and encouragement to look for a winner and it worked after the boys dominated the second half with Noah D’Crus playing a ball through to Finbar Kennedy in behind the defence he tries to chip the keeper who is outside the box who handballed it leaving the referee no choice but to send him off, leaving Preston to 10 men. Unfortunately, the boys could not find a winner and it was onto penalties. Preston starts the penalty shootout with Leeroy Cocco getting a hand to it but not enough to keep the first kick out. Skipper William Giannakopoulos steps up and slots it away to calm the boys down. Preston responded and put their second ben away. Jay Ryan calmly puts it bottom left. Preston scores their penalty. Matthew Scopelitti rockets his pen into the top left corner. Preston put their fourth pen wide. Unfortunately, Noah D’Crus hit the woodwork. Preston scores their 5th pen. Leaving Finbar Kennedy needing to score to keep NHS in it and he rolls it into the bottom right. Leeroy Coco steps up to the moment saving a crucial penalty which leaves it up to Baden Dearman to send NHS into Regionals which he does! NHS winning the final on Penalties 5-4.  Congratulations to all the boys involved.

Senior Netball

Our senior netball teams recently competed in the interschool division netball tournament.

The Year 11/12 girls absolutely slayed the day with three wins, zero loses coming into the finals. Unfortunately, Thornbury A team, took the win in the grand final by 5 goals, meaning NHS placed 2nd overall. We are incredibly proud of the girls, and the effort that was put in on the day.

For the first time in many moons, a senior boys netball team was entered into the competition. The lads were a strong willed group, and whilst the majority had never stepped foot on a netball court before, an amazing coaching panel, combined with their passion for competition saw them winning an amazing 2 games, including the tough battle for 5th place overall.  We are looking forward to seeing them on the court again soon.

Whilst the senior teams have not progressed to regionals, the junior and intermediate teams are yet to compete, and senior girls will be back at school champs in June, so stay tuned.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Ms. Lever, Sabatini and Mr. B, who made this day possible.

~Lily H and Millie C

State Softball

On a cold and blustery day, the intermediate girls softball team ventured out to Wheelers Hill for the state competition. First game up was against MacRobertson which started strongly but MacRob came back to win by 1 run, 11-12. Game 2 was against Balwyn HS, who won 17-7. Our final game of the day finished with a good win vs Copperfield, 17-10. A great effort by the girls, who made it to State for the second year in a row!

Senior Basketball

A tough day at the office for the Senior Boys Basketball Team A on 16 May, where the end result didn't reflect the effort and skill they showed. They played three games for the day; starting with a draw, a close loss by 2 points and a tough loss by 10 points to finish the day. What was great to see, was the camaraderie and support they showed for the other schools, even jumping in to work the scoreboard and scoresheets for another game during one of their breaks. The boys should hold their heads high with how they represented themselves and Northcote High School.

Intermediate Football

The intermediate girls AFL team played in the divisional tournament on a sunny Tuesday 23 June. Starting strong vs Preston, Northcote won 8.7.55 to 0.0.0. They continued the clean sheet with a score vs Thornbury of 7.2.44 to 0.0.0. Strong performances throughout the day from experienced teammates Olive Nicholson, Jada Stapleton, Meg Orr and Pamy Ercolano lead the way to advance to Regionals early next term.

The Year 9/10 boys team had a triumphant day out at intermediate footy. The boys started off with a great win against Preston with the boys starting to get into gear late in the last quarter.

After a short break Northcote where up against Thornbury who put up a great effort but ultimately fell short to our boys who stormed home after a slow start.

Finally after a gruelling first two games, Northcote played William Ruthven where all the players gelled together for a comfortable win showing some real class. After a great day, Northcote are through to the regional round.

Senior Football

A mixed day of results for the NHS Senior Boys' Footballers in the Darebin Division competition, in which we managed to get within touching distance of progressing to the next round, only to fall short in the second half of the final game...

Game 1 was a tough contest against SEDA, a school well-known for its sporting program and with a roster of athletic players who had clearly done some group training and looked well-drilled. NHS competed well and managed to hit the scoreboard, but despite goals from Luigi, Will and Euen we were beaten 7.5.47 v 3.2.20.

Game 2 vs Lalor was a chance for us to redeem ourselves and the players took the chance with both hands, running away to an impressive 11.6.72 v 2.2.14 victory. Jay kicked 3, Jett and Jack 2 each, singles to Taz, Josh G, Luigi and Tom B.

Other results meant that it would all come down to a game 3 vs Thornbury, with the winners progressing through to the next round of competition. NHS made a strong start and took a lead into half-time, thanks to goals from Jay and Ben, but the intensity lifted in the second half as Thornbury looked to take the ascendancy, and NHS lost some of their focus on the areas of the game where they were strongest, unfortunately we fell behind and the game finished as a defeat, 2.0.12 v 4.4.28.

Despite the final result, the mood in the group was high, great fun was had by all, and there were plenty of excellent footballing moments to celebrate.

Division Athletics

On May 26 we took a team of 60 students to Meadowglen Athletics track to compete in our Divisional Athletics carnival.  Our students were in good spirits giving their all and cheering on their team mates throughout the day.  We had many students bringing home place ribbons, with all first place getters progressing through to next term's Regional Athletics
