Food Studies
Year 10 Café Culture
This week, students in year 10 completed their design brief for Café Culture. They were required to demonstrate their understanding of food sustainability and ethical issues across the food system that could impact the food available for purchase in cafés.
Students identified a classic ‘café’ food from their favourite café and replicated this recipe in class. Using one of the key ingredients of the recipe they examined ethical and/or sustainability issues for this ingredient at different stages in the food system.
Food for health and wellbeing in Year 8
To finish off Unit 2 in year 8 food studies, students were given the brief to design a lunchbox that was able to incorporate the recommendations of the Australian Dietary Guidelines, in particular Guideline 2 to ‘Enjoy a wide variety of foods from the five food groups (The Australian Guide to Healthy Heating) and Guideline 3 ‘Limit intake of foods containing saturated fat, added salt and added sugars’.
Students also had to ensure that their lunchboxes met their individual food requirements and dietary preferences. Students in consistently came up with some wonderful lunchboxes with a variety of different foods to meet the brief.
