Creative Arts News

The Creative Arts department was in production mode earlier this month when they presented their sixth MCC Club Cabaret themed “A Night at the Theatre”. Under the musical and creative direction of Matt Segrave and produced by Belinda Aventi, students from Years 8 -12 performed 23 items from 21 different musicals over two nights, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May, in the college's Marcellin Hall. The hall was transformed into a performing auditorium with lighting and sound from Mark and Josef Macedone of Pristine Productions making the stage shine.

The show included the College choir opening with a song from the Lion King musical, a rendition of “Oh Happy Day” from the musical Sister Act, performed by the Pacific Islander students, “Voulez-Vouz” performed by the Year 11 students led by Amilia Catanzariti and “I Want it All’ led by Alana Davies. Meals for Royal Box ticket holders were served during the MCC staff performance of “Be Our Guest” and the night concluded with the Year 12 band, led by Charlie O’Sullivan, singing “Teachers Pet” from the musical School of Rock. There were also some songs from less well known musicals, such as DogFight, Back to The Future and Beautiful.

The 2023 Cabaret ‘A Night at the Theatre’ showcased the largest number of student musicians since the first MCC Cabaret in 2013 with more than 50 students from Year 8 - 12. For the first time, it also included 3 dancers, Mila Giannini, Gemma Rovere and Isla Sergi, whose captivating performances added a visually stunning element to several songs. The evening was guided by Year 12 emcees, Laura Dreyer, Jess Moraschi and Grace Keenan, who skillfully entertained the audience while introducing each captivating item on the program.

A huge thank you to the TAS and Hospitality departments for their culinary efforts on both nights. In particular, to Hellen Panarello and Maureen Shannon, who, supported by Lucia Dickie, Lee Summerville, Lou Patten, Sally Mitchell, Sanita Lole and the Year 11 Hospitality students, provided entree and main meals to 66 VIP Royal Box guests and prepared close to 50 platters feeding approximately 400 people over the two nights.

A special thank you to Michael and Jenine Calabria and the team at Calabria Wines who donated our wine and to Nin O’Connor from Nins Cookie Co who donated special cookies for our VIP Royal Box Package patrons.

The Creative Arts staff and students are already excited about planning our next production at Marian Catholic College and look forward to having another opportunity to showcase the talent within the College community.
