Secondary

Dear Families
As we acknowledge Reconciliation Week this week, may we remember that May 27 and June 3 are important dates in Australia’s history. May 27 marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. June 3 marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title: the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation.
On Wednesday, the legislation to set up the referendum on enshrining an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the constitution was passed in the House of Representatives. The final vote in the lower house was 121 in favour of the bill, and 25 against – applause rung out across the House after the result was announced. The bill still needs to be passed by the Senate before a date is set for the referendum later this year.
This significant first step towards a successful referendum outcome is a timely alignment for HaSS Week in the Secondary School. Students across Years 7 to 10 have engaged in a variety of activities, culminating in a ‘Sea of Hands’ being constructed near the Aboriginal Flagpole today to illustrate students’ perspectives on Reconciliation.
Congratulations to our ACC Cross Country team for their outstanding performance at yesterday’s interschool carnival, placing second overall. Wishing students involved in the World Scholar’s Cup Regional Round this weekend every success, as well as Year 10 Outdoor Education students embarking on camp next week a fantastic experience.
Prayer for Reconciliation
God of justice and forgiveness
Guide us as we continue on our pathway to Reconciliation.
Grant us the courage to speak out against the injustices that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have and continue to suffer.
Help us to see with new eyes, to listen to the stories of our Indigenous brothers and sisters and to feel with a heart of compassion.
Help us to build right relations with each other based on truth and justice.
Amen

Building update
We envisage occupying our renovated A Block, new Administration Building and our repurposed former Staff Room for the start of Term 3. We are most appreciative of the support and patience of our College community during the longer than anticipated building program.
2023 HASS Week
Throughout Week 16, the HASS Learning Area conducted a range of fun and engaging activities and events to celebrate the Humanities and Social Sciences subjects of Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History. The week has coincided with events being held across Australia, as part of National Reconciliation Week. In Year 7 and 9 HASS classes, students were given the opportunity to create a ‘Sea of Hands’ as part of the students taking part in a ‘deep dive’ into The Voice to Recognition and First Nations Reconciliation. These ‘hands’ have long become a symbol of community support for reconciliation, rights and respect.
During lunchtimes students have had the opportunity to partake in a ‘Presidents and Prime Ministers Challenge’, ‘World Flags Challenge’, ‘The Amazing Race’ and a ‘Referendum Voting activity’. The week culminated in the annual HASS Week barbeque, where students enjoyed a sausage sizzle and drink at lunchtime, with part proceeds going to Caritas. Thank you must go to all students who actively participated throughout the week and staff for their organisation of these activities and events.

CARAD Foodbank Appeal-Refugee Week
In the lead-up to Refugee Week, we will be supporting CARAD with their Foodbank Appeal.
CARAD provides practical and essential welfare, advocacy, and volunteer support services to asylum seekers, refugees and detainees in WA. They rely on grants and donations from the community to fund their programs and do not receive funds from the Federal Government. The people they help experience financial hardship, do not have the right to work, and are ineligible for government support.
In line with our College values of being ‘people for others’, it is our hope that all students will contribute to the appeal. If you could please drop off items no later than Wednesday 21 June.
CARAD Foodbank most needed items are:
Olive oil | Full cream UHT milk |
Basmati rice | Tinned fruit |
Honey | Tinned tuna (plain) |
Coconut milk | Full cream powdered milk |
Toilet paper | Muesli bars |
Thank you in advance for your support.

ACC Cross-Country Carnival
What a day the 2023 ACC Cross-Country Carnival was. Our team were beyond incredible to finish up as the Overall Runner Up School as well as bringing home the U15 and U19 Girls' Shields. Some members ran through sickness, others took on the mighty challenge of running in a higher age group and our senior members were absolute superstars to race for our team during their examinations. Every student ran their absolute best, and we are beyond proud of them all.
Congratulations to Sacred Heart College on their well-deserved victory. It was a true battle between us.
Another highlight of the day was the consistent sea of gold and navy singlets lining up along the finish line to cheer our runners home, this John XXIII spirit made the day even more special. The team spirit in tour sporting teams is inspiring so many other schools to follow.
Thank you to the wonderful staff joining our team on the day, Miss Pillera, Mr Bowen and Mr Campbell Tirant. A special thank you to our encouraging coaches, Mrs Hayley Rosa and Mr Will Everett for all their efforts in preparing our team for the big day.
Now… It’s time to start living and breathing athletics. Training will start later this term and we would love to see as many students challenge for a place on our 2023 team.
Winter NAS Competition
All teams are to be commended on braving the true winter weather in their games against Servite College this week.
Next week, our teams will all train at the College. After each training session, teams will be treated to a delicious sausage sizzle. These sessions will provide all teams with the opportunity to prepare for their games against the mighty Chisholm College in Week 8.
