Whats Happening in Room's 5, 6 & 7

Will Heron, Elyce Kenevin, Angela Whitcher and Natalie Watters - Classroom Teachers

Room 5

The students in Room 5 have been working cooperatively with each other to measure the capacity of various containers using sand and graduated cylinders. Students were encouraged to estimate capacities then tabulate, graph and calculate differences.

The student results were then averaged and each group presented their findings to other groups.

This activity involved mapping and measuring large areas using the trundle wheels. Here student learn to measure the perimeter and area of the basketball court then design their own court using the measurements collected. Extension activities involved drawing scaled mapping skills.

Students were using water and measuring the capacity of containers using standard units – millilitres. Students estimated the capacity then measured and calculated the differences before averaging their data.

Room 6

The students in Room 6 have been busily researching, planning and creating their dwelling structure for our Design Technologies project.

We have been learning about the Swan River Colony and the types of shelters that were occupied by the convicts and settlers.

Students are working with their group members to construct a dwelling that would have been similar in style to a shelter of that time.

Many natural resources such as leaves, twigs and sand have been gathered by groups. Students were also given balsa wood to use as the main material, as well as clay and aluminium foil to act as wrought iron.

The goal is to not only construct a dwelling suitable for that time, but to ensure that it is windproof and waterproof!

Room 7

The students in Room 7, during Design Technology have been designing and making a marble run. Students investigated which materials could be used to construct the marble run. They had to decide what features the marble run needed for the marble to successfully navigate the pathways. The marble run had to include a funnel, catcher and bends. Features of the marble run were discussed, including slants, fixings and support structures. Students have showed impressive collaboration, problem solving and creativity during the design making process.
