Matthew Phillips, College Sport Captain Cranbourne Campus

When did you start your studies at St. Peter’s College?

I started my studies at St. Peters in Year 7 which was 2015. I didn’t know a single person at the College but I quickly adapted and grew my network rapidly. I really enjoy school, but initially, as most kids can relate to, I didn’t enjoy it, but as soon as I decided that I could make school enjoyable by participating in various activities and also having fun with my mates, it soon became very enjoyable. I now love school and I found that as I progressed through the Year levels my level of interest grew, as I was able to study subjects that I was actually interested in as I could select the subjects I wished to study.

Tell us about your family?

I have a family of five which we all live together. I have a great family and we all share a close bond which creates a positive environment.

Tell us about your other interests?

I have a strong interest in real estate and investments, I spend the majority of my spare time trying to expand my knowledge of these fields and gain as much insight into them as possible. In conjunction, my favourite sports are AFL and Golf which I also play on a regular basis.

Year 12 Studies:

I study English, Further Maths and Ethics which are fairly stock standard for most students. I also study Physical Education, Sport & Recreation and I completed Business Management as an Accelerated Subject in 2019. I’m also apart of Deakin University’s Accelerate Program studying a Commerce Degree Majoring in Marketing, which is very exciting for me as it’s a strong interest of mine and an achievement I value highly.

Have you already completed any of your VCE Studies prior to this year?

I have recently completed Business Management as an Accelerate Subject in 2019 which I elected to do as I’m motivated and interested in the field of business.

2020 College Annual Theme

For I am gentle and humble in heart

What does this mean to you?

It means to be open and inviting to all people around you and no to judge others but to be accepting of all characteristics that individuals have.

How will you live this statement throughout the year in your role?

I will continue to be me and hope that I demonstrate this statement through all my actions.

What are your goals for 2020?

Overall my goals for 2020 are focussed on my schooling, completing my VCE studies to a high standard and be the best person I can be. I also just want to enjoy the year as much as I can and make more great memories with the boys.

For yourself in your Captains role?

As a captain my goal is to consistently produce fresh ideas that will be beneficial and welcomed by my peers and to lead by example and be looked upon as a great role model to other students.

For yourself as a Year 12 student?

As stated before my goals for 2020 are to complete my VCE studies to a high standard and be the best person I can be.

Personally?

Live life to the fullest and be an all rounder.

What would you like your legacy be for St. Peter’s College?

All I want to be remembered as is a good person who was enjoyable to be around, I don’t feel as if I need to be known for anything extravagant and I believe the less I try to leave a “legacy” the more natural I am as a person. I believe people respect a leader who is relatable rather than one who goes out of their way to be known as one.

What are you immediate life ambitions and aspirations once you complete your studies at St. Peter’s College?

To put high school life behind me and focus on the future. I want to get into University and complete my Commerce Degree and then get into the work force and eventually run my own business.

What are your long term life ambitions and aspirations?

To be successful and get what I want out of life. I want to be happy and ensure that I’m always pushing for something greater than what I’ve already got, I believe that being self-motivated is the key to success.

In one sentence what would you like to say to your fellow students to convey your pride in your College?

Be yourself, don’t try too hard to fit in, as being yourself is much more important and influential on others around you, select friends wisely as you may become a product of the people you hang around with and “Be Not Afraid” to step outside the box and express what you want and how you want it to be.
