Term 2 Senior School Wrap-up

For both staff and students, Term 2 2020 will certainly be remembered as one of the most interesting and challenging times of our school lives. We are very proud of the way in which the majority of our Senior School students embraced the Microsoft Teams platform and adapted to the new circumstances of remote learning. We hope that students can take with them the positives of the remote learning experience, be it new organisational skills, an increase in the independence of their learning, a newly learnt way of collaborating with peers or even just a fresh appreciation for the joys of being face-to-face and interacting with staff and students on-site.

Year 11 and 12

While some Year 11 and 12 students were understandably anxious about their return to school on Tuesday 26 May, they have adapted well to the “new normal” of hand sanitisers, crosses on the floor and other logistical changes. Animated conversations and laughter have been a big part of reconnecting with peers and teachers. Our VCE students have also had to deal with a large number of assessments since returning to school and have handled this workload in a mature manner.

Some of our School Captains have been running a Year 12 lunchtime Kahoot each Friday in The JLC to assist in reconnecting the year level. This has been fiercely contested and much appreciated by the Year 12 cohort.

For students completing a Unit 3 and 4 subject, please note that the Term 3 and 4 SAC Calendar is now available on Compass Newsfeed. Students should download a copy of this and see their Coordinators if there are any issues.

VCAA has released the examination timetable, which can be viewed on the VCAA website. The GAT is scheduled for Wednesday 9 September from 10.00am to 1:15pm.

The Languages examinations oral component will occur between Monday 12 October and Friday 6 November, with students to be notified of dates, times and locations via advice slips from Monday 17 August.

The English and EAL Exams mark the start of the written examination period and are scheduled for Tuesday 10 November. The final exams are on Tuesday 1 December.

Year 10

Tuesday 9 June saw our Year 10s return to on-site learning. The Year 10 Coordinators and the Student Leaders surprised the Year 10s with a small “Welcome Back” gift as they arrived at their lockers on that first morning. While the time back on-site has been relatively short for Year 10s, it has nonetheless been very important in terms of consolidating their learning and also in starting to consider their future pathways. A video outlining the different pathways available to Year 10 students going into Year 11 in 2021 (VCE, VCE with VETis, VCAL, Headstart) has been shown to students and is also available for viewing on Compass Newsfeed. We recommend that all Year 10 students and their parents view this video. Further details regarding the Course Counselling process will be released early next term.

Our ELC students will be entering mainstream Senior School classes from the start of next term. We congratulate them on their hard work this semester and wish them all the best in further developing their English language skills as they work towards VCE studies.

Year 10 Food Technology - "Art Focaccias"

Year 10 designed and created Art Focaccias in Food Technology as part of the Food Trends unit this term. This recipe is a basic yeast dough that students embellished with a variety of herbs, seeds and vegetables to create amazing works of art that were not only a feast for the eyes but very tasty.

Focaccia Art Bread

Ingredients- Dough:

  • 2 1/4 cups plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • 1  teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water (43 degrees C)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (43 degrees C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon polenta
  • Flaked sea salt and toppings and olive oil as needed for glazing.

Method:

  1. Combine flour, yeast, dried Italian herbs, sugar and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add warm water, warm milk, and 2 tablespoons oil; mix until well combined with a wooden spoons or spatula and until a soft and sticky dough is formed.
  3. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, drizzle the sides with 1 tablespoon oil, and cover loosely with plastic wrap.
  4. Let ‘prove’ and rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  5. Oil a swiss roll baking sheet liberally. Dust with one tablespoon of polenta.
  6. Turn the dough out onto the prepared baking sheet. Gently spread and flatten dough to fit the entire sheet. Press your fingers into the dough to make light dimples over the entire surface.
  7. Let rest, uncovered, at room temperature for 10-15 minutes. Prepare topping decorations.
  8. Place oven rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat 230 degrees C.
  9. Decorate dough by gently pressing down toppings such as cherry tomatoes, asparagus, red, green, yellow peppers, olives, dill, sage, parsley, basil, pine nuts, pepitas, red onions, spring onions etc.
  10. Brush a thin layer of olive oil over the top and sprinkle with salt.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature 175 degrees C and continue to bake until golden and bread springs back when gently pressed about 20 more minutes.
  12. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then carefully slip out onto a cooling rack.

Cool and serve at room temperature.

1 to 1 Digital Learning Program 2020

In 2020 we will continue with our whole school 1 to 1 Digital Learning Program for all students.

Our Year 7 students will be required to purchase a laptop, Year 8  students will continue with their laptop from 2019 and Year 9 students will  use their iPad for the final year .

The purchase of these devices is crucial to the learning program as students will access eBooks rather than an extensive number of expensive textbooks. Our Year 10, 11 and 12 students require a laptop.

Details of the 1 to 1 Digital Learning Program for all students and important  information regarding suitable devices are detailed in the attached policy.
