Year 9 Science Excursion

Mission to Mars:

Students in Year 9 were given then opportunity to attend the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) to further their classroom investigation of the geological features of Mars.

Students spent one session as astronauts on Mars, undertaking roles such as commander, geophysicist and geobiologist.

The aim was to collect data from the surface of Mars to study in the afternoon. During a second session, the students worked in Mission Control, maintaining voice contact through headsets with their paired astronaut and monitoring the environment for their astronaut, ready to trouble shoot in the case of equipment malfunction or the presence of solar flares.

The students enjoyed their interactive role-play, involving the analysis of data taken from Mars, and thus were able to learn more about the geological features and geological timeline of Mars.
