RINGWOOD SCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS
The Ringwood Secondary College Swimming Carnival was held on the 12th of February, at the new Aquanation venue, on what proved to be a great day of competition. A big turnout from the Year 12 Class of 2016 also added to the atmosphere, with the Year 12 students wearing some of the best (and worst) costumes of the day and also competing in many events.
Mr Moody and Mr Kent added to the carnival atmosphere, commentating on the events and utilising the big screen to inform and entertain the large crowd.
Outside, on the grass area, Mr McKay hosted a karaoke competition, acoustic performances and took song requests from the crowd, whilst Mr Ricci and Mr Saunders ensured the novelty events were fiercely contested.
The performances from our new Year 7 students were particularly exciting and we look forward to seeing many of them in action at the Maroondah Division Carnival.
The house competition proved to be a particularly close fought battle this year, as Freeman aimed to become the first back-to-back champions under the new house system. Freeman (Blue) made the running for the most of the day, with Jackman (Yellow) and Frazer (Red) trading places in 2nd and 3rd. Heading into the last event Freeman still held the lead, and ensured they wouldn’t lose the championship by entering a team in every possible relay. The large number of participants from Freeman helped carry them to back-to-back titles. The Final standings were: Freeman 584, Frazer 548, Jackman 521.5 and Mabo 379.5. A tough day for Mabo, but with the Cross Country on the last day of this term, redemption may be just around the corner. Frazer still looking to claim their first sport house title and Jackman’s third place their lowest finish thus far, after finishing runners up at swimming last year and claiming both the cross country and athletics crowns.

Many of our swimmers will now represent Ringwood at the Maroondah Division championships on Friday March 11th at Aquanation, where our team will be aiming to win its 24th successive swimming championship. Parents are most welcome to attend the Division swimming day to support the team.
A big thank you to the students for their enthusiasm and participation throughout the day and to the staff who worked tirelessly in the many jobs required to make the day such a successful one.
SOPHIE’S SWIMMING SUCCESS CONTINUES
During the summer holidays, Sophie Caldwell competed at the Victorian Age Swimming Championships and was able to win an incredible 10 individual and 3 relay medals, in her best medal haul yet at these events. Sophie won 8 individual gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze as well as a gold, silver and bronze in the relay events. Her efforts saw her crowned Age Group Champion for the third successive year and she again won the Herald Sun Trophy for the highest point scoring 14/15 year old at the meet. At the Victorian Open Championships, held just before school returned, Sophie won bronze in the 1500m and she now turns her attention to open water swimming, with Sophie competing at the National Open Water Championships in Queensland and participating in a select training camp also in Queensland. Congratulations Sophie and best of luck for the events ahead.

The club is launching with Under 13 and Under 14 teams, and is open to all students regardless of the school they attend. So if you haven’t had the chance to join a team in the past or perhaps your local team has too many players, you might consider joining this new club.
