Junior School

Our Year 7 “Transition Program” has now commenced with a range of activities taking place over the past two weeks.

All Year 7 students have now completed their i-pad training. Sessions were run over three days with one community completing the training each day. The Year 7 students and the Community Coordinators would like to thank Miss Rafferty and Miss Usher for all their time and effort into training all Year 7 students. On completion they were well informed and left the training with smiles of satisfaction on their faces.

On Friday 12th February the Junior students attended the swimming sports at Aqua nation the new pool complex in Ringwood. The Junior community were in high spirits and everyone dressed in their house colours. We congratulate all those who competed in events and to everyone in the stands who joined in the house spirit.

On Monday 15th 7A – E attended the Study Skills and Well Being day and on Tuesday the 16th February 7F-J . Students travelled by coach to the Heathmont Baptist church to complete three sessions, Awareness, Connection and Expression, Study Skills and Cyber Safety and Respectful relationships at RSC.  Students looked at planning a homework timetable around all their weekly commitments and using various aspects of the internet with safety. On behalf of all Year 7 students the Community Coordinators would like to thank the large team of staff who made these days possible. Without their support these activities would not have been run. Their time and effort is much appreciated.

On Wednesday 17th February our Junior School Ambassadors attended a training session at the new REALM centre at Eastland. Students from both Melba and Heathmont Secondary Colleges joined our students for a very informative session. Mrs Allison, Mrs Keenan and Mrs Ricci from Melba presented at this session. We would like to thank Mr Phillips for joining the group. Congratulations to all our 2016, Junior Ambassadors.

Year 8 Ambassadors were presented with their certificates and badges at Common on Tuesday 23rd February. Year 7 Ambassadors will receive their certificates and badges at Common next Tuesday 1st March.

All Junior Ambassadors will commence their duties next week and will be involved in the College tours over the next six weeks.

Our next big Transition activity was on Friday 19th February. Students travelled by coach to Adventure Park, Geelong. Unfortunately the weather was quite wet but it did not deter students from engaging in all the activities run by the park. Students enjoyed the day with new friends and catching up with old friends from primary school.

The Coordinators would like to thank all the staff for their time and effort assisting with this busy day. It was a great success and enjoyed by everyone.

Our Year 7 students will now experience their first full week of timetabled classes after a very busy start to the year with all the Transition activities.

Swimming Carnival 2016

We were pleased to see such a strong Middle School presence at our recent Swimming Sports carnival. We feel it is important that students attend sports days such as these, even if they aren’t planning to participate. Much effort was made to ensure that the day was a fun one, full of varied events both in and out of the pool.

Middle School Sports captain Harry Norman wrote the following report:

Excitedly we ventured down to Ringwood’s AquaNation on Friday the 12th of February, where Ringwood Secondary College were holding their annual swimming carnival.  Year 9 students showed exceptional school spirit, dressed in house colours, encouraging and supporting their house teammates.  We had a massive number of students compete for their houses in many events throughout the day, from 50m freestyle to noodle races. The day was a total success and we will all be looking forward to next year’s carnival.

Uniform

It is delightful to see so many of our Middle School students wearing appropriate school uniform We have worked hard over the first few weeks of Term 1 to enforce the importance of correct uniform and we thank parents who have continued to support our endeavours.

Year 9 Camp

The deadline for camp medical forms has now passed but there are still some students who have not yet returned these. We ask that you attend to this if you have not already done so. We will be chasing students up individually next week as the camp date is fast approaching.

Parents are also required to provide consent for camp on Compass. This needs to be done even if the medical form has already been returned. Finally, the second Challen9e payment is due to be paid no later than Friday 4th March. Information about this payment is on Compass.

Year 10 Queensland camp

The annual Year 10 Queensland camp has now been finalised and will take place from the 5th to the 8th of December. The camp costs include flights, accommodation, most meals, entertainment and entry to all theme parks. Details have been posted on Compass and many families have already reserved their place on this tour. Please note that we can only take a limited number so it is a first in first served situation.

InterGREAT news

Success was at the heart of this week’s interGREAT lessons as Andrew Scott spoke with the students about his endeavours to qualify for the Sydney 2000 Olympics team. The Personal Project was also launched which makes up 40% of the students’ assessment for Semester 1. We encourage you to find out what your child has chosen to do for their project and to get involved with their educational learning journey.

In the coming weeks students will consider the alternative notion of failure. They will hear from renowned mindset coach, Dara Simkin who will explore ways to overcome fear of failure and limiting beliefs.

RU MAD

Each week students who are seen to be doing something to ‘Make a Difference’, will be nominated for the RU Mad prize. These will be drawn each week at our interGREAT assembly.
