Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and King’s College is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 2 September 2022.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)

This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 25 May 2022 at 11:00am.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. It is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Prep to Year 6.

If you have a younger child at home, you can also take part in this fun event, you can register for free here: www.alia.org.au/EventDetail?EventKey=NSS22A

Family Reading Month

For those families who receive a Scholastic Book Club catalogue you will see on the back page an advertisement for Family Reading Month. This activity is running during the month of May. It is designed to encourage reading for pleasure at home, and the aim is to read for at least 10 minutes a day. What a lovely family activity to do before bed as the nights get cooler. More information about Family Reading Month can be found at www.scholastic.com.au/scholastic-in-the-community/national-family-reading-month-2022/
