Happy Mother's Day

When God Created Mothers

When the good Lord was creating mothers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when the angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling on this one.” And the Lord said, “Have you read the specs on this order?” “She has to be completely washable, but not plastic; have 180 moveable parts ……. All replaceable; run on black coffee and leftovers; have a lap that disappears when she stands up; a kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair; and six pairs of hands.” The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands…….no way.”

“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord. “It’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers need to have.” “That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel. The Lord nodded. “One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, “What are you kids doing in there?” when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know and of course the ones here in the front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, “I understand and love you” without so much as uttering a word.” “Lord” said the angel, touching his sleeve gently, “Come to bed. Tomorrow……….”

“I can’t” said the Lord. “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick……. can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger mince……….. and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower.” The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed. “But tough!” said the angel excitedly. “You cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure.” “Can it think?” “Not only think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the creator.

Finally the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek. “There’s a leak” she pronounced. “I told you, you were trying to put too much into this model.” “It’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “it’s a tear.” “What’s it for?” “It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride.” “You are a genius”, said the angel. The Lord looked sombre. “I didn’t put it there.” (Emma Bombeck)

Election Day

As mentioned in last week's newsletter, our school will be a polling booth for the federal election on Saturday 21st May. We are going to take this opportunity to raise some funds for our school. Our Parents and Friend's Committee are organising a toy sale and bake sale.

Starting next Monday we will leave some tubs in the office area for donated toys. We only want toys that are in good order please.

We are requesting some home made cooking to sell at the bake stall. Cakes, sponges, biscuits or slices would be really appreciated. Any items for the bake sale will need to be brought to school on Friday 20th May. We ask for cooking that does not need to be refrigerated over night.

Year Five/Six Camp

Our Year Five and Year Six students returned from Camp Rumbug yesterday, safe, happy and very tired. As is always the case with the camp experience, our students will have memories of happenings on camp they will take into their adult lives with fondness. Upon talking with the teachers last night when they returned from camp, it was evident that our students as always enjoyed camp life, were very well behaved and entered into all activities with enthusiasm. It was also very evident that both students and teachers needed a good, well earned sleep. Thank you to our teachers Denise, Marty, James and Jess who took such diligent care of their students the past three days.

Project Compassion

Last Sunday at 10.30am Mass, a group of our students presented Father Eloysius with the money our school raised during the season of Lent for Caritas Australia. A big thank you to our Sacred Heart School community for generously donating this money which will be used to provide the necessities in life that so many people both within our community and further afield do not have.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) for our students in Years Three and Five will take place on Tuesday 10th May, Thursday 12th May and Friday 13th May. The NAPLAN tests are an annual assessment of all students in Victorian primary and secondary schools. Tests are also conducted for all students in Years Seven and Nine. The tests assess both literacy and numeracy skills.

Parents and Guardians of our students in Year Three and Year Five will have received a more detailed letter regarding their child's NAPLAN tests today.

Enrolments for 2023

A reminder that enrolments for 2023 Year Prep will officially close on Monday 20th June. Pleasingly I have completed more tours for potential Year Prep students in 2023 than for any other Year Prep year in my time at Sacred Heart. If you know of any families who would like a tour, please encourage them to contact the school by phone or email.

Joke Corner (From the Parish Bulletin)

A newly ordained deacon was asked to hold a gravesite service for a parishioner who had just passed away and who had no family or friends. It was his first official assignment so he readily accepted. Taking his duties very seriously, the deacon left early the next morning for the cemetery. However, he made several wrong turns and got lost. When he finally arrived he was more than an hour late. The hearse was nowhere to be seen and the two workmen were eating lunch nearby. The young deacon got out of his car, quickly threw on his vestments and hurried over to the freshly dug grave. Looking down into the hole, he saw that the lid was already in place. With a huge sigh, he took out his prayer book and recited a few chosen words. After he had departed one of the workmen said to the other, “Maybe we should have told him he just blessed a septic tank.”
