The Wellbeing Team understands that children and families are under a lot of pressure at the moment due to the Corona Virus. Things are changing daily, there are announcements, restrictions, statistics and recommendations. These times are unsure, unprecedented and everyone is feeling its effects. We know it must be difficult to know how to best support your kids at this time, and as a team we are praying for you.

The Wellbeing team is available during work hours to provide parental support in person or by phone, and possibly even down the track online support. We are happy to answer your calls or emails.

In the next few weeks if you do choose or the government chooses, for you to look after your children at home may we encourage you to return to the basics.

Being present with your kids where possible, will provide the reassurance they need to feel safe and secure which is their most basic need at this time. Providing your children with a place to feel safe, your company where possible, and a warm meal is initially important. Once they feel safe and loved, children can go on to other things like learning at home, or staying content in isolation from their friends or extended family.

Australian play specialist Cat Sewell suggests that play is an important aspect of children’s growth and learning and that “children are geared for play, they are wired for it and they are wired for imagination.” Ms Sewell suggests “it’s important not to stress too much, that children need the freedom to come up with their own ideas and that play helps kids to, let off a lot of steam”. She suggests that “the way kids are going to be processing the changes and stress that they are picking up at the moment is through play. So it’s absolutely crucial that they’re able to do that at home or wherever they are.” Allowing your children to have free play where they create and you ‘sit back’ is important.  Ms Sewell recommends that parents should not be afraid to go low tech and that old fashioned simple play ideas are fine.

Other advice for parents stresses the importance of maintaining routines at home. There are many useful links to help support parents in this and we have included one below.
