St Xavier’s have had a busy first semester for 2021, celebrating indigenous culture and learning about the history of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island peoples for NAIDOC Week.

St Xavier’s not only have been commemorating NAIDOC Week, but have been incorporating indigenous education and culture into everyday schooling, with a strong focus on art, language and history.

A special assembly was held on Friday, June 25, to celebrate all the work over the past semester, and that is work that the school is determined to continue principal Jen Honner said.

“Indigenous education and celebrating Australia’s rich culture is something that we believe is important to incorporate into the curriculum throughout the year,” Mrs Honner said.

From kinder students learning about the rainbow serpent and the Kamilaroi people to year five students learning about Aboriginal land management to year four students examining the impact of the First fleet’s arrival, the students have immersed themselves in learning and indigenous art.

Another new initiative at the school is having The Opportunity Hub which is based in Tamworth visiting, working with year’s five and six students, focusing on cultural identity.

Local artist, Jack Conlan, has also been involved with St Xavier’s, helping the year one and two students paint boomerangs and make string art.
