AROUND THE SCHOOL

EUCHARIST MASSES

With the easing of the latest lockdowns announced July 27th, St Laurence O'Toole Catholic Church will be allowing the 50 downstairs, 10 upstairs and 6 in the foyer for the Leongatha Church.  First Eucharist scheduled for this weekend will be postponed to a series of three Masses during the next two weeks.

Our experience last year planning for events has prompted the rescheduling to smaller events in the near future that are more predictable rather than waiting for weekend Masses to allow for greater numbers.

NEW Mass for celebrating the Sacrament of First Eucharist:

Tuesday 3rd August - 5 pm

Wednesday 4th August - 6 pm

Tuesday 10th August - 5 pm

NEW BOOKING DETAILS: All correspondence in relation to this change and making a booking for your family are to be directed to Anne Hemming at the Parish Office via 03 5662 2020 or leongatha@cdsale.org.au  Anne will be taking note of bookings and numbers to make sure the events are within all restrictions and are COVID safe.

We are all doing our best to support families to participate in this Sacrament and make it a celebration for the candidates. Maximum numbers are set for each Mass.

SPORTS NEWS

Lightning Premiership

Tuesday 13th July saw the annual district lightning premiership held at Mary MacKillop College. Each team had to play 3 x round robin games in their pool to then qualify for a grand final between the two leading teams in each pool.  Our school did best in the two netball competitions where both teams won two games to just miss making the grand final. Our football and soccer teams battled hard throughout their games but unfortunately were unable to grab a win.

A big thank you to our parent helpers Natasha McRae and Kym Berryman whose help in umpiring was greatly appreciated. Also it was pleasing to see parents “dropping in” throughout the day to encourage their children in their various games.

Lightning Premiership - By Grade 6 LP reporters.

On Tuesday, St Laurence Lightning Premiership Football, Netball and Soccer teams competed against 4 different schools at Mary Mackillop.

Football

Our team was ready to play the first of three rounds.  The first was against Poowong who had a good team.   We had a good start keeping it away from the goals then when they got a goal we equalled it out.

After our rest and a pep talk from Mr Hughes, we used new positions and had a good game against Inverloch, with more contests and overall the best game we had with a 9 point loss.

Last game we played was against Leongatha Primary School. It wasn't as good as our last game.  We played till the end trying to get the ball and getting it down the other end. After we had a score of around 60 - 15. Even so, the St Laurence's football team had exquisite sportsmanship and had a great day overall.

Netball : A

We arrived at Mary Mackillop and immediately started warming up. Our first opponent was Poowong.  We come out on top with the win 6-3. Overall the team played really well together and was very encouraging!

Our second game was against Inverloch.   It was a very close game and overall everyone tried their best even though some were more experienced than others. St Laurence won with a score of 7-5.

Our last game, we were up against Leongatha Primary knowing they had an amazing  team.  Although we lost, we tried our best to not give up. Leongatha Primary did come out on top 9-4.  Both teams played very well!

Netball: B

Netball B team had a great first game, keeping ahead with 9 goals and not letting the other team get the ball.  After their hard work they ended up winning 9 - 0.

After a break we were at it again, powering through with another win.  Not an easy game but  in the end come out on top with a close score of 8 - 6.

In the last game, St Laurence's was overcome by Leongatha Primary School who played a great game.  We lost by 5 points.

Overall, St Laurence Netball B team had 3 good games and great effort was put in by everybody.

Soccer:

We played at Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College. We scored one goal but conceded eighteen. Most of our team has never played soccer before but everyone was getting involved and having a go with amazing sportsmanship. It was an amazing time and everyone had a great day.

Regional Cross Country - Lardner Park

Last Thursday 15th July finally saw the Gippsland Regional Cross Country run at Lardner Park in Warragul.  It was the third attempt to try and stage the event so for the competitors it was a long drawn out affair.

Our team running on the day were most pleasing in their efforts and results, with  all of them being able to finish in the top half of their respective races.  Ella White was able to qualify through to the state championships to be held in Melbourne.   Congratulations Ella.

A big thank you to all the parents and relatives who transported the girls to Warragul.
