PRINCIPAL REFLECTIONS

           A message from Dr Jake

Dear Parents & Friends,

Participation is a necessary component of life. It is not possible to go through life without being a part of something. We become members of a family, take part in sporting teams, join interest groups, members of a class or school ... the list goes on and on.

I was lucky enough when I was growing up that my parents gave me some opportunities to participate in a variety of events and activities. They never pushed me to get into these things but they did encourage me to go out and have a try! I was no world beater at cricket, rugby league, rugby union, music, swimming, athletics or a number of other things I attempted over the years, but I did give each one of them a go and I can honestly say that I tried my hardest to succeed at each.

I believe it is vitally important to a child’s growth and development for them to gain a variety of experiences by participating in a variety of activities. I do not equate participation with winning. They are two different things entirely. The issues of competition (healthy or otherwise), winning at all costs, fear of failure are issues that are important in the scheme of things but not in this conversation!

The example I want to use from this week is the efforts of our students at the Athletics Carnival today. It's all about “having a go”. We are not looking for elite athletes (if we find them it is a bonus for them and us!). We simply hoped that each student, in each event they entered, gave it a go and tried their best. To do the best that they can possibly do is all that we ask of each person. We can ask for no more than that! It is said that success is 10% ability and 90% attitude!

Where would we be if we only did the things in life that we would be certain to excel in? If we were to only tackle something if we knew from the outset that we would succeed?

Today's Athletics Carnival demonstrated that with the right support and encouragement our kids can achieve remarkable things. For some, simply finishing an 800m race was a momentous achievement.

While due to COVID our parents were unable to join us today, no doubt you will see and enjoy more of our carnival in our Facebook posts. Be sure to join the conversation and share your vote of thanks.

My heartiest of congratulations to all students who turned up today and participated in what was a wonderful day for St Edward's. Well done Mrs Gippel and your team for a fabulous day!

Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us as we are only too happy to help.

Peace & Best Wishes
