Becoming Historians

The big idea in learning across our communities this term is Community. Our students are learning about themselves, their families, the community we live in and changes that have occurred across Australia’s history. To do this, they are learning to become historians.

In the History curriculum, students have the opportunity to develop historical understanding through the application of the following historical concepts and skills:

  • sequencing chronology
  • using historical sources as evidence
  • identifying continuity and change
  • analysing cause and effect, and
  • determining historical significance.

When students learn these concepts and skills, they gain a better understanding of history.

This week, we will take a look at the learning happening in the Year 3 and 4 Community.

The Year 3 and 4 Community have been becoming Time Detectives and identifying how we tell our story? To do this, they needed to learn some of the skills about being a historian. They read Gilbert and the Guardians of Melbourne.

Check it out below:

The Community has started to look at different sources of information. The book ‘Beth, the story of a child convict’ told the story of a child convict through multiple perspectives.

To respond to the book, the students needed to analyse the perspectives present in the story. They did this by using the Step Inside Thinking routine. The Step Inside routine helps learners to:

  • view a place, people, situations, events or things through different lenses and points of view
  • open up possibilities for creating, e.g. a written piece

Check out their perspective thinking through the eyes of the character Beth below:
