Grade 5 Snapshot-Term 2

Week 9&10

Writing

Last week in writing students had a focus of improving narrative writing. They continued to use the process of 'Showing not Telling' by describing characters and settings using the 5 senses. They also worked on describing a characters feelings by writing what the character's facial expression would be, what their body language might look like and what the character might be saying.

This week students are showing their understanding and knowledge of this skill by completing a final 'Show don't tell' piece of writing. The topic is Rollercoasters, the students need to give their audience a description of being on a rollercoaster without explicitly saying that's what they are on a Rollercoaster.

Reading

Last week in reading, students developed their understanding of the difference between inferring and predicting and how these comprehension strategies support us when reading texts. They then explored the Singapore Zoo website and practiced predicting content to support them with navigation. This week in reading, students have continued working on creating inferences and making deep connections with task cards, texts and advertisement. Additionally, during each lesson, students read independently and create responses in their Reader's Notebook to demonstrate their comprehension of their good fit books.

Maths

Last week in Maths students were focusing on Data Representation and Interpretation. They chose their own statistics to research such as; homelessness, demographics, asylum seekers and refugees, weekly wages and life expectancy. Students then had to pose questions from this information and graph the data. This week in Maths students did a pre-test in fractions and decimals in preparation for Term 3. They also used their knowledge of all four operations to solve a code breaking, murder mystery.

Inquiry

Over the last couple of weeks, students have been getting their creative juices flowing. Last week, they learned about how music can be used as a medium for an artist to communicate a message, belief or opinion. Students also completed their summative assessment; where they had to create a "Banksy" style artwork. They also had to analyse 3 different artworks and interpret the meaning. This week students have been learning about music in film and how it can have a profound effect on the audience. Students then created their own short clips and presented them to the class.
