Since launching the Character Initiative in 2016, the program has evolved considerably through relationships with other organisations and programs and introducing activities and programs across the entire School, from ELC to Year 12.
Here is our program for the year:
In the Junior School, a very exciting program, THRIVE, has been launched to students and staff. This unique program places Kilvington at the forefront of developing students’ social and emotional development.
Soft skills are explicitly taught to students through the medium of different Social and Emotional Learning programs: You Can Do It, Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships and Health which is part of the Australian Curriculum.
These programs are taught through dedicated lesson times. Walking into a classroom during THRIVE learning time, an observer may see class teachers conducting circle time and discussions, role plays, targeted activities and group work.
In addition to this dedicated teaching time, GEM (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness) time runs in Junior School classrooms every day between 2.20 and 2.35 as a complimentary program to THRIVE.
In 2018, Kilvington partnered with The Resilience Project to assist students to build their character strengths and explore the concepts of gratitude and empathy. GEM time allows students time to reflect, practise mindfulness through the use of gratitude journals and guided mindfulness activities.
The introduction of Character and Connections workshops for all students in Years 7 to 10 are designed to help improve their relationships with staff and their peers, and reflect on and strengthen their own character.
Each year level has a different focus theme and this theme will be developed and reinforced through a variety of practical activities and workshops.
Giving students the opportunity to have time away from academic pressures to improve their overall wellbeing and mental health will in turn help students become more committed to their academic journey. The workshops will also give us time to resolve any concerns and manage students’ relationships.
A major part of developing a students’ character is the act of doing for others, so this program will also incorporate a community service activity. During the final workshop students will connect with one of the following services Cancer Council, Fareshare, Big Issue, Katandra School, Our Kitchen Table or Sacred Heart. Students will learn about their chosen charity/ organisation as well as give of their time.
Building for our new Sport Centre is
underway and is looking to be completed
by early 2019.
The Kilvington Sport Centre will provide
an outstanding facility for our students,
staff and community to practise and enjoy
physical activity, thereby enhancing both
performance and overall wellbeing. The
Centre will include important spaces
to maximise the Sport, PE and Health
programs at Kilvington. These include:
Opportunities to be Involved
We warmly invite you to contribute
to the development and fit-out of the
Kilvington Sport Centre. The Kilvington
community is a connected and tightknit
one, and we are excited to take you on
this journey, and for you to have the
opportunity to feel part of this important
new development. We are exceedingly grateful for any support that you are able
to give. And remember, all donations are
tax deductible.
Come Along On the Journey
A microsite has been developed to
provide you with more detail about the
Sport Centre including videos from our
students, staff and parents. We have also
developed an animated ‘fly through’ to
give you a greater sense of the external
and internal environment of the facility.
You will also be able to make your
donation via this page –
