French Tour
Going to France has always been a hope of mine, so to go on this tour was amazing. For the first two weeks, we were in home-stay in Bordeaux. Here, I was really able to appreciate the French lifestyle- despite the language barriers caused by my poor French. It was also in this that I got to understand small differences within our cultures such as the value of meals, family time, and free time. It was interesting to note popular snacks which included a heap of “gateaux” (cakes, biscuits, etc), yoghurt, and purees. I was able to experience numerous activities such as grape cutting and winemaking, visiting the Miroir d’eau (reflection pool), the shops, Darwin, Arcachon, and Dune du Pilat, among other things. After our stay, we progressed to Paris. During this week, we were able to truly embrace being tourists and headed to all the sites. This included: the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame (my personal favourite), the Louvre, the Orsay Museum, Versailles, Arc de Triomphe, the Opera House, and of course, more shops. All of this was punctuated with numerous crêpes, croissants, chocolates, and canelés. Our final days were spent visiting war memorials in Somme, and Disneyland. It was such a sensational experience, and I am certainly sad to have left.

Victorian Young Leaders to China- Week 1 recap.
After 20 hours of travel, we arrived early Monday morning in Beijing and hit the ground running. We went straight into the classroom to meet our new teachers and friends at the Beijing Language and Culture University. Our first lunchtime was an amazing experience! The BLCU canteen spans across 5 levels and has every type of food you can imagine. Although some of us stuck to chicken nuggets the rest of us chose more interesting options such as spicy soup noodle, sweet bun, corn juice, dumplings with fruit paste and mysterious cakes. The local supermarket has the most amazing fruit and yogurt selection!
We are settling into the routine of university life. The morning classes are interesting and interactive and in the afternoon we play sport, get into cultural activities such as mask painting, dragon dancing, paper-cutting and interesting cultural lectures and tutorials.|
We have also been getting out and seeing lots of Beijing. On Tuesday afternoon we went to the Temple of Heaven. Originally, this was the place where emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) held the Heaven Worship Ceremony. It is the largest and most representative existing masterpiece among China's ancient sacrificial buildings. It was amazing to walk the same paths once walked by emperors.
