PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Principal For A Day

Ms Michelle Kleinert stepped out of Manningham council chambers and into Doncaster Secondary College for the 18th annual Principal For A Day event on Thursday, 11 October. Principal For A Day gives a wide range of community and business leaders from all walks of life first-hand experience of a normal day in a Victorian government school.

I was thrilled that Ms Kleinert has been so keen to gain a first-hand experience of our school and participate in a variety of activities such as leading class discussions in Year 11 Business Management and Year 11 Legal Studies classes, sharing leadership insights and ideas with student leaders, and addressing the Year 8 student assembly around an area of her expertise – workplace bullying and the law.

Principal For A Day aims to:

  • increase understanding and awareness between schools, business and the wider community
  • promote the great work that schools do
  • give business and community leaders first-hand experience of working in a school
  • enable school principals to develop ongoing relationships with leaders from other spheres, and
  • increase opportunities for schools and the community to work together in mutually beneficial ways

A highlight of the day for both staff and students was the inclusion of ‘Ruby’ in the day’s activities.  Ruby is a 2 ½-year-old cavoodle and Ms Kleinert’s pet.  We are investigating the possibility of a therapy dog for our school in 2019.  The overwhelming response from both staff and students is that a therapy dog would be a welcome inclusion to our wellbeing team!

Farewell to the 2018 Victorian Young Leaders Chinese team

On Sunday. 14 October, nine of our Year 9 students accompanied by Mr Kirk Dunn departed for China.  They are local students who are studying Chinese and will be part of a six-week immersion program that will accelerate their Chinese language proficiency.  Students will also get to explore the sights and sounds of China, encompassing both traditional and contemporary culture.

We wish the team safe travels and look forward to hearing about your journey on your return.
