LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

GREY WOLF AWARD

On Monday night, Finn Malcolm was awarded the Grey Wolf Award, the highest honour possible for Cub Scouts. The award is completed over two years and achieved by around 5% of Cubs each year.

Finn completed four Level 2 badges including Literature, Swimming, Codes and Signals and World Traveller in addition to the Campout and Their Service Our Heritage special interest badges.

The Grey Wolf Award also requires achievement of the Gold Boomerang badge, which comprises 30 tasks related to survival skills, history, citizenship, science and the Arts. Finn attended a two-day Leadership course and provided leadership to the group through his role as a Sixer.

Finally, Finn planned and led a 10.7km hike on the Domino Trail and created a lightbox diorama about Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Law: ‘The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.’

Finn encouraged other Cubs to aim high too. “Cubs has mostly been a lot of fun. Each week we do ice luge, archery, rock climbing, BMXing or other activities at the hall like First Aid and cooking. And then ropes courses or canoeing at the camps. When I started I couldn’t believe I would get the Grey Wolf because there seemed so much to do, but I kept chipping away at it.”

Finn will move up to Scouts and is keen to work on First Aid.
