Grandparents Day

On Friday 13  March Mater Dei welcomed over 130 Grandparents of our Year 7 students. Year 7 hosted this day in line with Catholic Schools week, promoting our school community and displaying their appreciation for their Grandparents and the role they play in the development of their lives.

We started the day off with a welcome address and some insight into the learning that takes place at Mater Dei Catholic College, followed by a tour of the College led by the Year 7 students. It was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces as students led their Grandparents through the wonderful facilities including the art rooms, science blocks, Glass House, Café, ovals and Resource Centre. Many Grandparents commented on the contrast of the learning environment compared to when they were at school which led us into the next part of the day “When I was at school.” Many of our Grandparents shared stories and memories of small classrooms, one teacher, minimal equipment, strict rules, learning from the Sisters and the Brothers as well as the limited subjects on offer. It was evident just how much education has changed, however, it was invaluable for all of our students to reflect on the wonderful community in which they learn and remember that their Grandparents were students once too.

The day finished with Year 7 serving a delicious lunch that was prepared by our Café and Canteen and many of our Year 11 Hospitality students.

On behalf of our College community, thank you to all of the Grandparents who joined as on the day. It was a pleasure to meet the Grandparents of so many of our students, hear their stories, see their smiling faces and the joy their presence brought to the Year 7 students.
